: Whats in your Wallet? Does…
davoaz May 6th, 08, 8:04 PM your Credit Card Co. keep changing your balance due date?
I think mine is pissed cause they don’t make any money off me, so they they try and trick a late fee out of me.
Every month I pay my bill in full and never carry over any balance. If I can’t afford to pay off the bill I don’t buy it and I’ll do with out and save longer until I can pay for it. Mostly, I use the good ole CC for online purchases to protect myself in case of fraud or a bogus deal.
So here’s how they tricked me to get some money out of me since I refuse to get caught in their “live the life now” and get caught up in the revolving interest trap.
About 2 years ago my credit union sold it’s CC part of the business to a big name bank. Back then, my due date was the 19th of the month all the time. And typically I’d log on a little early and pay it off. Well, after the new bank took over, one month I was real busy and log online to pay the bill on the 18th, what I thought was the day before it’s due, and find out my due date was bumped up few days (16th I think) so now I’m late on my payment. So they nail me for a late fee.
Here I am 2 years later and my charges for last month is now due May 11th . So from what I’m seeing, every few months they advance the due date a day or so and hope to catch me like they did about a year ago.
Andy69 May 6th, 08, 8:06 PM They play all kinds of dirty tricks. You have no choice but to play by their rules.
The best way to avoid it is to refuse to play the game.
My CC expired last June, and I never activated the new one. My life hasn't changed much.
Wooderson May 6th, 08, 8:27 PM Call them and ask for a reason. What they are doing may be illegal. Put them on the spot.
spdracer256 May 6th, 08, 8:27 PM I had the same prob with one of my cc. They told me that they were entitiled to change the due date at any time for any reason. They said that they established a revolving 30 day cycle that is why the date kept changing. Also, if the due date was to fall on a weekend or holiday, the due date was moved to before the weekend or holiday. Needless to say, they removed the 1 late charge and we no longer do business:yes:
the due date of the one credit card I use varies by 1 to 5 days each month. When they send an e-mail that my e-statement is available I login and look at the due date. Haven't missed a due date in over 10 years. Heck, haven't carried a balance or paid interest in 10 years either :) . They can play their game, but I play the game better. But, they get what?, 6% or so off every purchase you make, so they are still collecting money from vendors even if you don't carry a balance. If 6% is true, they made $2700 from vendor fees in 2006 and $2100 in 2007. I use the card to collect Marriott Reward points toward free hotel stays. If I can't pay for an item in full when the bill is due, I don't buy until I have the cash to do so.
Finally May 6th, 08, 9:04 PM I've had a GM Mastercard for over 10 yrs and they haven't changed the due date on me. Like you I always pay in full, they have not made a dime off me in all that time. Dump the card and get another one, they're certainly not the only game in town.
EDIT: What's in your wallet, if you actually have a Capitol One card they are the worst. I have never heard anything good about them.

Well, let's put some of it in my wallet, some in my wife's purse, and then maybe the rest will fit in yours! :D
Chevello May 6th, 08, 10:23 PM You guys are cool, I want to be like you someday and not carry balances. We haven't used a card so far this year.
I've changed my tax withholding from my check since the refund was way too huge this time, and been working overtime, but I'm still just barely keeping up. But I have a goal!
I want one day to say this:
I've had a GM Mastercard for over 10 yrs and they haven't changed the due date on me. Like you I always pay in full, they have not made a dime off me in all that time. Dump the card and get another one, they're certainly not the only game in town.
If only all the family and friends would hold off on birthdays, christenings, weddings, graduations and we could skip holidays for the next 5 years, I might be able to make it.
You gotta keep an eye on the CC co's they aren't out to help, they're out to make your money.

I do as Alan does with my Discover card and a back up master card except I have them both setup on autopay for the whole amount on the due date. No suprises that way and get to keep my money till the last day!:hurray:

Anyone that has a CC should know that cash advances are the biggest ripoff ever. Variable interest rate CC's are the norm. I don't even look at the fine print because all I use the card for is to charge it up, pay it off each month, and get my Marriott Reward points :) . I do have a second CC with Chase (the Marriott one is with Chase as well) that is FIXED at 7.99%. I negotiated several years ago for that and they have stayed true to their word. If it converts to variable, and they don't change it back, I'll cancel it. I don't have kids yet, so ask me in 10 years how this no CC balance thing is going. I hope I'll be able to just copy/paste this as a response. I have too many CC's, but I only use one card. I need to just cancel the others.
davewho1 May 7th, 08, 6:19 AM Use a debit card - if you don't have the money, don't buy it! Ask me how I know ...
Screw the CC companies, esp. Crapitol None.

rak1 May 7th, 08, 11:39 AM My dates and rates have never changed on any of my cards and I've had them for 20 years; I guess I've been lucky.

I have two kids, and haven't carried a CC balance in years (at least 7-8 years, probably 10)... Of course, it sometimes drives me nuts, thinking I could just buy that supercharger, etc and just "put it on the card"... But I have been good...
And its like an addiction... I WANT to pay off my bill every month...
I basically have 1 Visa, through my Credit Union, that pays 1% "cash" back, and an American Express optima. I use the Am Ex for internet purchases, and gas (mainly because I usually fill up at Costco and they don't take Visa). mAKES IT EASY TO MAKE SURE MY CARD INFO isn't being misused... The Visa is for everything else (and internet orders that won't accept Am Ex)...
Use a debit card - if you don't have the money, don't buy it! Ask me how I know ...
Debit card? No way... I still use my credit card for almost everything. The debit card, only for those instances where I can't use credit (such as at the Post Office, "buying" a Money Order for Chevelle parts :D ). I also use the debit at Costco, but pretty much everything else is CC...
When I first met my wife, it drove me nuts that she bought everything with her CC, including groceries... But she showed me that she pay the balance in full, and it was much easier to keep track of her balance, or dispute charges on the CC versus the Debit card...
I also have a few "store" cards (Sears, Mervyns, Macys, etc) that we ONLY use if there is a deal (Get 10% off when you use you Sears card, etc)... I also play the store cards off each other for major purchases (Sears had a sale AND additional 15%, and I went into Lowes with that info and bought a refridgerator a few months ago)...
I have a few more Visas that I don't use... I am afraid to cancel, due to potentially harming my credit score. Looking at refinancing our house (just for a better rate, NOT taking any money out), and after that, I might cancel a few of those other cards...

Actually having a lot of credit cards, even if they're zero balance and always paid on time, is not always a good thing when looking for a mortgage. Your available line of credit includes all of those cards. The way the bank looks at it, you could go out and run all the cards to limit and not be able to keep up the payments.

The way around this would be to call the credit card companies and ask for your credit limit to be lowered. I've done it a few times. It's funny the response you get "you want to LOWER your limit [as in what the heck are you thinking]. Pretty funny stuff! Platinum or Gold cards are tougher to lower the limits as they have a floor limit (say $5k) that they won't go under.
I had a bunch of CC's with $0 and lots of credit limit when I got my mortgage, but that was when lenders lent to anyone with a paycheck, a checking account, and any empty wallet.
bowtie6872 May 7th, 08, 4:27 PM mine they make it due on sat..
so you lose a day to pay,, but they still get the 30 day's intrest..
I pay mine online. weekly.. ;)
one closed my account because they made no money..

X2!
Cash doesn't bounce, get declined, or stolen on line. My checking account only has money in it two days before I need to use it. I pay my bills every month by going into the office, handing them cash, and getting a reciept. No worries, no fowl ups, no lost mail, no "network failures".
Ahh, the benifits of a small town, I can run all over town and pay all my bills in about 25 minutes on the first of the month.
Rent, insurance, water, electric, and the storage unit all together is about $400 / month. How did you think I was able to put gas in all my big blocks?!
davoaz May 8th, 08, 12:49 AM Well. I haven't been entirely truthful. I do have big time CC debt in a round about way. This will probably be what gives me my heart attack before I hit 45 years old. Even though I don't carry any debts beside my mortgage, seems like my significant other can't control herself. Lets just say in the 11 years we've been married the amount I had dig out of rainy day funds to pay off her CC debt that spiraled out of control I could have 2 nicely completed Chevelles in my garage. After the third time the marriage counselor suggest we split up our accounts and let her manage a part of the household income. That didn't work either. For the 4th time she has a huge debt she can't pay off.
Funny, when I first started my career my boss's wife was doing the same thing to him. I said myself man I'd never put up with that. Well once you say I do you'd be amazed at what you put up with.

Good Point...
It wasn't a problem before, as all 6 FICO scores (wife and I) were above 799... Nothing's changed in the past year, except the new mortgage (which was higher than when we got those scores)... Still well below what we need for the refi, even with these tightened lending issues... I wonder how much our scores dropped with the bigger mortgage, but I am too frugal to "pay" to see my scores (you can get free credit reports every year, but they want extra for the scores)...
Good idea Alan, about calling to ask about lowering the limit...
Although I wonder how bad it really would be to actually close several accounts myself? Would my credit score take a big hit? Or just a few points?
Thats the problem, no one seems to know...

Closing a CC account can only help. It's a combination of available credit line, outstanding debt, and past payment history. Closing accounts reduces your available credit line which makes things look better. Available credit line is not as big a factor as it use to be but it still factors in. More so if you payment history is not good or you have a lot of outstanding debt.
