: Mixing MSD ignition with Mallory products(and ? bout Street Pro Billet)
AllGoNoShow Dec 5th, 03, 1:22 AM If I buy the MSD-8361 Street Pro Billet, it says that it can only be used with MSD ingition boxes, and while I have an old 6A in her now, I want to eventually switch over to a Mallory Hyfire Digital 6(it is cheaper then MSDs version and has more features)...would this ignition box still run the MSD distributor and work alright?
Also, I'm curious as to why on MSD's website they don't say that the Street Pro Billet is really intended for racing, they don't put up a RACE sign on top of it like the other distributors, just a STREET, TOW , and 4X4 sign. Butthe 85551 distributor does get the RACE sign but isn't that distributor just the same as the Street Pro Billet except with no provision for vaccum advance? I'm confused...would this distributor work good for a 75% street 25% strip car?
Bob West Dec 5th, 03, 8:14 AM Why not just buy a Mallory distributor??? Heard alot of people complaining about the chips for that other ignition lately. Personally I don't run an ignition box, Mallory unilite dist. and a Blaster II coil.

Personally I don't run an ignition box, Mallory unilite dist. and a Blaster II coil. I was looking at the Mallory unilite but I have heard too many stories of them being very touchy to voltage spikes and blowing out the $100 module..my wiring is spliced together pretty badly from the guy who previously owned the car and I dont trust myself to remmeber to unplug the battery and distributor everytime I work on something electronic.
PS- Robert, I noticed you are running the Blaster 2 coil with the Unilite distributor..how is that working for you? I ask cause the Blaster 2 coil is only $32 where as Mallorys Coils are like $70.
Bob West Dec 5th, 03, 10:53 AM I've been running the Blaster2 coil and Mallory unilite for 4.5 years now in this car, works great,I've never had any igntion problems with the car,and I've run the Mallory Unilite conversion in my 2 previous cars with never a module failure, you have got to make sure you use a ballast resister before the distributor,I believe 8 volts is all you need to run the module, that is what blows out the modules(too much voltage). Mallory makes that spike protection deal, but I've never used one.
Adam Loose Dec 5th, 03, 10:56 AM Yep,my mallory unilite blew out the module.I heard this happened to lot of other people also.Never use them again,MSD,all the way.
CDN SS Dec 5th, 03, 11:07 AM Good question ....... I too went with the Mallory Hy Fire V1 for same reasons but will be hooking it up to my " Ignitionman " modified small body stock distributer with a MSD trigger inside ....... been told should work fine !!
Nickel333 Dec 5th, 03, 8:29 PM 2 yes i said 2 modules in 2 years. My current one works fine but for how long, its not voltage spike, cause i have it hooked up properly. Then my HyFire IV box went out randomly. Now that its hooked up with no box my tach jumps all over hell at idle then smooths out after 1500 RPM..... WHAT the hell??????. And its hooked up right, ive gone over it several times. Im buying the Digital 6 box, Pro Billet Dist. And Coil this winter. If you want my Mallory ill cut you a good deal on it works fine right now but i want MSD
