When breaking in a new cam, RPM is kept at 2000 or so. Is this to splash oil on the cam to lubricate it or to put heat into the cam to season it (make it harder).

Reason ? comes up is last couple engines I've put together I've always used STP to lub up lifters and cam (never had a problem). The other day a guy at work told me not to use it as it's not necessary as revving it to the 2000 mark is to keep oil off the cam and lets the cam build heat.
He's not saying NO lub just not anything that slippery.

Which is right  ?

Added RPM causes oil thrown off the rods to bathe the cam lobes. Not enough rpm, not enough oil splash.

It is also to generate enough tendency to make the lifter spin in the bore, to minimze the chance that they will sit there and not spin; which is basically instant death to a lifter and cam lobe.

Thanks guy, That is pretty much what I have been reading. It's worked for me in the past so I guess I'll keep doing it.

I would use GM EOS instead of the STP though...
