Hey all,

I am putting a Ramjet 502 into my 1969 Chevelle. The connectors to the distributor are almost touching the firewall. I would like to have more clearance. Could I just reindex the distributor to move the connectors to point to the passner fender?

1) Right now the connectors point rearward (12 o'clock).
2) The rotor is pointing at ~8 o'clock with the #1 cylinder at TDC. That means the #1 spark plug wire is at ~8 o'clock on the distributor cap.
3) If I spin the distributor 90 degrees counterclockwise this would put my connectors at ~9 o'clock and my #1 spark plug wire at about 4 o'clock. The rotor would still be at ~8 o'clock.
4) Can't I now move my #1 spark plug wire back to ~8 o'clock (and complete the proper order with the plug wires) and have everything be back in time or am I missing something?

Thanks for any input.

Don't see any reason that you can't put the connectors where ever you want/need them to be as long as they have some clearance to move with the engine and not contact the firewall , manifold or any other solid object.
Allow for your timing of the engine also.
To the rest of your question -Yes.

HEI ??

I have the connectors on my 59 pointed straight ahead.
indexed 'normally'---and they would eventually get knocked off by my wiper motor.

i believe the ramjet 502 comes with a standard issue 87 and later small cap computer controlled distributor.
yes, you can just turn the distributor and move the wires around as needed. it won't hurt anything- well, it might use the distributor to figure out when #1 is firing so it can time the injectors, in which case you'd have to leave the wires where they are on the cap and turn the whole works.

Bryan,

It's not HEI. NovaD stated it correctly. There is a computer controller on the distributor. My firewall is smoothed so the connectors on the wiring were line to line with the firewall.

I clocked the distributor 90 degress and reordered the plug wires for clearance. I'll know in a couple of weeks whether I did it right or not!

Thanks for all the help.
