I am trying to get my transmission full of ATF...

So here is the story...I got the car...would not shift, and there was no fluid in the transmission (no fluid = no shift = rookie mistake). I got it to the point where it was actually showing a little bit of fluid on the dipstick (and would shift...kind of)...now the problem begins. It needs more transmission fluid to be full (and I assume shift a little more smooth). So I start the car, let it warm up, and begin to add more to get it to the full line on the dipstick. With the car running as soon as I add any ATF I get a little drip out the back of the transmission (right where the cross member bolt goes up). Maybe a small leak of some kind from the back of the pan (gasket, seal). Now when I turn the car off everything I put in on top of whatever was in there (enough to put a small speck of fluid on the end of the dipstick) drains out (very quickly, not a drip).

any ideas??? If you need more info let me know. I am so close to getting this thing drivable...fix one thing and find another...gotta love it

First thing to do is find out for sure where the leak is. Take some brake cleaner and spray the area down to clean it good. Then try filling it a bit, and find the leak. If it's from the pan gasket, is it from a bolt hole, or the pan rail itself? If you do end up needing to drop the pan, drain it through the tube using a suction gun and some 1/4" tubing through the dipstick first. Napa and Home Depot carry the suction guns, they're under $20 and worth their weight in gold in a situation like that. Just have a rag handy when the hose comes out of the tube. Put the fluid into a clean bucket and you can re-use it afterwards, too.

i had a tranny leak that haunted me for years and it ended up coming from the accumulator cover on the side of the transmission but the fluid would drop down to the lowest point like the front of the pan or just right near the crossmember. in my case though it would leak after it was warm and i would see a pancake sized puddle if it sat overnight. the accumulator has a snap ring like device holding it in place its real easy to take out but the seals you have to get them from a tranny shop shucks wont have em.

I saw that cover, it seemed dry, but I'll check it again after I change the gasket out...
