: What cars have good Electric Vacuum Pumps
Heckeng May 3rd, 08, 10:27 PM Hey all, I have a 454 with around 10" vacuum at idle, and just switched to a dual 8" booster and it wants more vacuum than the engine is giving it. I am going to install an electric vacuum pump but am having difficulty finding one that I like.
I've seen the SSBC ones and the Master Power and Brakes unit, but I've heard that they are both very loud.
I've also read that early 80's GM vehicles often used them and I've found the list of the cars that did in fact use them. They apparently worked well, but they are unable to be bought any longer. You can't even get rebuilt ones from Autozone or O'riley etc. So they are out.
I have heard that some BMW and Volvo cars use them, and I'm sure there are others, but I have not been able to find what cars came with them. There seem to be very few options from the aftermarket so i would like to find a unit off of a wrecked car that isn't 30 years old already. Any ideas of what cars to look for that were at least built in the 90's or newer?
onovakind67 May 4th, 08, 7:30 AM I don't think you'll find one in a 90's car.

Mid-80's Volvos also have a real nice vacuum pump. We used one of these on our road racer.
Heckeng May 4th, 08, 10:11 AM I'm pretty sure that there are some in the '90s and '00s because they often use them on diesel and turbo diesel engines. Some have electric, and some have mechanical vacuum pumps though.
That web page seems to be one of the only sources for electric vacuum pumps out there. Everybody keeps going back to it, and maybe those cars really are the only source and the ones today are all mechanical or something. I'm not sure.
rianbechtold May 4th, 08, 2:08 PM The only 90's vehicle I'm aware of that had them in the 90'3 was the G30 vans. However, they use the same as the cars listed on that one link. Most diesel applications use hydroboosts. Why not just by a rebuilt or new from gm?
rianbechtold May 4th, 08, 2:15 PM To clarify, those are the only ones i'm aware of that aren't mechanical driven.

I would just buy one, in fact that is what I would prefer as they are quieter than the other aftermarket ones I've seen. I've called GM and all of the other parts stores and they say that they don't make them any longer. You can't get new or rebuilt units.:(

I know the cardone ones are available because I've ordered them for customers this past year.
Heckeng May 4th, 08, 7:17 PM I've tried Autozone, and they say it's discontinued. I just tried to order both the Cardone, and the Standard Motor Products pump from Parts America (the second link) and they show both the SMB and Cardone units available, but when you try to order them, they say they are both unavailable. Where have you ordered the Cardone units for your clients?
Todd1312 May 4th, 08, 11:58 PM Running into the same problem here too:(
rianbechtold May 5th, 08, 3:45 AM I ordered them through Kragens but if partsamerica can't get them maybe Kragens can't anymore!? I'll check tomorrow.
Heckeng May 9th, 08, 9:19 AM I have checked with every parts place in Columbia Missouri now, and every one I can find on the internet. I think the GM pumps are gone..period. I guess it will have to be one of th e loud ones from SSBC or Master Power Brakes.

JWagner May 10th, 08, 11:42 AM Maybe taking that part number from the ebay ad and put it into GM Partsdirect would tell you if that is still available new.

Unfortunately the only "original" ones you will find are used. They stopped producing them years ago. There is a company out there and I can't remember what it's named that refurbishes them. Pete

Heckeng May 14th, 08, 1:13 PM It's unavailable unfortunately. They show it on their site, but if you try to order it, it says there are none in stock with no delivery date. I've e-mailed the company several times and keep hearing the same thing. We can't get those any longer.
