Well, I'm at a loss and maybe one of you guys can help. Installed new set of plug wires and a new set of Proform roller rocker arms on my small block today. While I was at it I had to loosen the distributor and fix a water leak in the intake manifold (vacume canister in the way). It fired right up and I set the timing at 16 degrees advance where it belongs. I took it for a spin and noticed the power was not even close to where it should be. I pulled over to check under the hood and noticed it was ideling much higher but all wires were in correct place and didn't see any other problem. When I got home I checked the timing again and it was way off the scale I'd guess at 40 degrees or so. That explains the high idle. But when I went to move the distributor back toward 16 degrees it would not even idle below 30 degrees. What the heck, what could cause this. The timing chain has only a few hundred miles and the distributor is a new MSD billet set at 18 degrees mechanical. Any guesses?
