What cam will wake this crate motor up?
running a turbo 400 and 3:31 gears.

Word is that Gary no longer works at GM anymore, maybe someone else can step up and answer your question Donny.

This is a poorly matched combination with rectangular port heads and an 8.75:1 compression ratio and a 1500-4500 type of hydraulic roller cam.

I would suggest swapping to oval port heads, 1.5 more points of compression and something like a 232/240 @.050 with .575/.595 lift on a 110 lobe seperation hydraulic roller and a dual plane intake. This with a 2500 stall and 3.31's will make a tire shredder in a Chevelle!

With just a simple cam change, you are limited in going much more radical than what it came with because of the low compression. 211/230@.050 .510/.540

Mine pulls strong to 6000+ rpms and smokes 'em!

If I had one of the 454HO motors, I would do 2 things. 1. Change the cam to the ZZ502 cam (as a minimum). 2. Pull the heads : flat mill the heads .030 for a 6CC chamber reduction or angle mill .100 to about 108CC for a healthy dose of compression increase. Install rocker stud replacements (3/8" x 7/16" conversion studs) to make the valvetrain adjustable.

Those 2 changes would probably pick up about 60 - 70 HP and a whole bunch of torque. Other than labor, the cost should only be about $400.00.
