: Predict my 1/4 mile time ('68 with 350/350)
Brucelee Mar 7th, 04, 9:44 PM I'm going to the track for the 1st time ever on Saturday. Just changed heads and cam. My combo is below, any guesses on what I will run?
1968 Chevelle Malibu
350 block with L2256 Forged pistons
Edelbrock 750 on Performer RPM intake
AFR 190cc heads, ~60 cc combustion chambers
Comp Cams 280H, 1.6 Erson roller rockers
Calc SCR = 10.02, DCR = 7.93
Hughes 3000 Stall -> TH350 -> 3.73 Posi
255/60 R15 rear tires
I'll post my times next week.

Have fun, Thomas
Bob West Mar 7th, 04, 10:42 PM ya got the mph right bomber...my sons truck ran a best of 13.89 yesterday at 95mph
Bomber '67 Mar 7th, 04, 11:02 PM I wish Bruce the best, I'm just thinking:
1) Bruce's first time EVER at the drags - not normally when most people cut good 60' times.
2) At test and tune the track is not usually in best form, lots of street tire guys tracking water up to the line. Street tire cars don't lay down good rubber on the starting line like slicks do.
3) New combo: how well dialed in is carb and ignition curve?
No matter what anybody has read in a magazine or on the internet - there is more to quick e.t.'s than just certain parts being on a car. Like how many average guys degree in their camshaft, rather than just lining up the dots? Often times a person has to go back and do all the fine tuning they passed over on initial assembly to get all the power - then there is suspension setup and everything else.
The track can be a humbling place.
No matter what, have some fun and use your first track day for what it is: a starting point.

ddeennis Mar 7th, 04, 11:16 PM this is my predictions....... on street tires.........first pass 14.20's at 100-101 mph with 2.20's 60 ft times.......as the day goes on and you learn to launch the car.......you should even with the car having a roughed in tune.....run 13.20's to 13.30's with 1.90 - 2.00 60 ft times at 102 to 104 mph............you should be shifting around 6300 to 6500 rpms....
after this car is dialed in it should be breaking into the 12's with a set of small slicks............
Brucelee Mar 7th, 04, 11:50 PM Wow, thanks for all the detailed predictions.
I didn't degree the cam graemlins/sad.gif , I have done no carb tuning (carb has stock rods, springs, jets), and I have barely messed with the timing.
I'm sure there is a lot of work to be done to get optimal performance from my combo (including driver practice). I have 3" pipes, so the car sounds pretty mean. I just hope it has a little bite to match its bark.

Bomber '67 Mar 8th, 04, 1:58 AM Oh yeah, while you are at the track you might as well take advantage of the scales if they are open for a self serv weigh in.

ddeennis Mar 9th, 04, 1:47 AM lol........hurry up and go race it........lol im interested in what it will run.......its always nice to see new combos ran, to see what they do........its such a rush to run down the 1/4 mile track......dont forget...leave on the 3rd amber light!.......dont wait for the green light......lol and remember dont floor it it......lol ease into the gas and get the feel for the traction........hope you have fun.....keep us posted on your day at the track.......fun fun fun.......
LXS Mar 10th, 04, 12:13 AM When are you taking it to the track???....I'm also anxious to see what you run :D ...I've ran a best of 8.80@79mph on the 1/8 mile (Irwindale Speed Way), my best 60' was on my first pass, which was also my first time ever down the track at a 2.02...after that they kept getting slower. I finally figured out that it was the burn out that was killing me. I stopped doing burn outs and the 60's got better. I've got a lot of tinkering to do with my motor, but I'm positive that there's a good 8.50 in it...just have to work at it ;) ....according to my virtual engine calculator I should run a 13.73@99mph on the 1/4 mile...we'll see when the day comes...anyways, good luck, have fun, and stay away from those long burn outs if ur runing street tires graemlins/thumbsup.gif
i had a very similar combo in my 71 Chevelle a couple years ago. about the only differences are the fact that you have better heads than i did and i had 4.10 gears instead of 3.73's. i never ran 1/4mi with it, but my 1/8mi times were 8.60's with the vacuum secondary 750 carb, 8.56@80mph was the best overall time with an 800dp on it. it did a best of a 1.76 60ft on sportsman pro m/t's.
but it also wasn't my first trip to the track. i think at best with the parts you have and properly tuned and hooking up, you could get some 8.20's or possibly even as low as 8.00's 1/8mi. it sounds like a very nice combo. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Bomber '67 Mar 11th, 04, 2:08 AM Standard correction factors for 1/8 mile to 1/4 mile are: 1.57 for e.t., and 1.26 for mph. M71 would have been ~ 13.5x @ 101+/- mph in the 1/4. A 1.76 60 is excellent for that power level, suspension/traction equation had to be reasonably solid. Usually every .10 reduction in your 60' time is worth ~ 2x that in total e.t. reduction. Let's say m71 got a 2.1x 60' time instead of a 1.7x 60' time, then I would expect 13.50 + (.4x2), or ~ 14.3.
Enough with the math! - now go burn some rubber smile.gif
