Which of items were installed after the engine was painted and which were installed before painting.

Like starter & starter bracket/bolt; flywheel inspection cover; distributor & clamp/bolt, spark plugs, coil, coil bracket; heater hose nipples, tempature sending unit, pvc hose clamp, carb vacuum cannister line ? Thanks.

Colvin's books show the following being done after painting:
Flint engines
* Distributor
* Coil & plug wire
* Spark plugs
* Temp switches
* Hot test
* Water & oil drained
* Exhaust manifolds
* Spark plug wire supports, heat shields, misc. brackets

Tonawanda engines show paint was the last item done before (1) Hot test, (2) water and oil drained, and finally (3) racked and readied.

I may be wrong but I think things like starters, fans, pulleys, fuel pumps, alternators, etc. were installed at the assembly plant rather than the engine plant. Essentially anything that's in the AIM was done at the assembly plant as that was where the AIM was meant to be used as a guide.

Thanks Dale. I have the 1st edition of Colvins book, do you know what page or chapter that information is in? Were all BB made at Tonawanda for the 66 model year?

Thanks Dale. I have the 1st edition of Colvins book, do you know what page or chapter that information is in? Were all BB made at Tonawanda for the 66 model year?For the 1960-1964 years I have the 6th printing, 1965-1969 years I I have the 9th printing, and 1970-1975 is the 8th printing. My 1965-1969 series book has the table on page 56 but in all three series the same table appears - Chapter 3 "Engine Block Identification" on the 3rd or 4th page of the chapter. Other revisions may vary but probably still in chapter 3.

Right under my nose. Got to read those shaded areas. So then there would be overspray on the distributor housing and hold down clamp and bolt. Overspary on exhaust manifolds, valve covers, and water pump cross over hose, and bell housing.

Would they try to paint the area of the block that is hidden by the exhaust maniflds?

But starter and starter bracket, oil filter cannister, fuel pump, dip stick, carb & fuel line, coil & bracket & bolts, and anything else, like brackets and pulleys, that are shown installed in the AIM. The AIM makes it simple.

I noticed a couple of days ago, some discussion about overspary of the dipstick & tube. But it shown the installation in the AIM, with the bolt as part of the engine assembly; but probably no overspary unless the painter got real wild.
