: What is the best vortec intake?
Clyde_Maston Apr 9th, 04, 5:03 PM Well, I purchased a new set of L31 vortecs(062's). I need to buy a new intake as well. My combo is a 331 (327+0.030), 9.4:1 compression, 216/228 @ 0.050, headers. My Lunati cams range is from 1500-5500 RPM. I know it needs a dual plane, but there are a ton of them out there about the same price all claiming the same things. What are you folks running with vortec heads and how do they perform. I'm looking to help out the low end of my motor. Its a little soggy on the low end.
Whats your opinion of the stock GM manifold and the marine manifold. Anyone running one of these?

Clyde_Maston Apr 9th, 04, 5:06 PM The heads came off of a new 383 crate motor from GM that was being built up by a performance speed shop and it had the marine vortec intake on it. The guy at the shop said that it would perform very well and would sell the new intake for $60.
What do you think?

pdq67 Apr 9th, 04, 5:22 PM Is the new Marine intake just a stock, cast-iron Q-Jet intake or is it a hi-po cast-iron one or an aluminum one that has brass inserts in it like a BB has, if they are even made for the SB??
B/c if it is a high-rise Q-Jet intake, it should be a dandy, AND even if it is a stock old-fashioned cast-iron Q-Jet intake, it still will run good on the little motor, imho..
But if you want to step up, an E-brock Vortec RPM will do nicely.. As will the cheap clone that some call a rip-off of the E-brock if it is made in a Vortec model??

I know that it is a steel intake, not aluminum. I won't see it until tomorrow when I pick up the heads. The guy at the shop claimed that the marine vortec motors were different from the normal ones for auto's. He claimed they were set up to make more torque and were therefore a better intake. This might mean they were set up with small runners to make higher intake velocities. On the other hand, if it will handle a 383 it should easily handle my 331.

Bob West Apr 9th, 04, 9:29 PM my son has the air gap on his 355 vortec,,,started with the edelbrock clone,,,which seemed to work fine,,,he likes the high rise though.
Umass Apr 9th, 04, 9:46 PM the heads i have are drilled for an old style intake. some say that this createds all kinds of hassel, and that you need to use thick intake gaskets. but i have to deal with it seen as im using an old corvette FI intake. If you already had a very good or particular intake that you wanted to run I would get the heads drilled for the old bolt pattern and see if you cant get it to work right. if it dont work you can alway use the vortec specific intake.

I'm sure the marine manifold will work good on your 331 with the Vortec heads. The older "Bowtie" manifold is a great piece, but I haven't been a party to an actual dyno of the Vortec.
bored&stroked Apr 10th, 04, 5:36 PM I run a RPM and a victor on my two vortec motors. The RPM is on a stockish vortec 350 motor from a 99 pickup. I can cruise down the street at 1000rpm with the TC locked up around 45mph. THATS torque smile.gif And I can accelerate from that point up to 80mph without bogging the engine. I've always been partial to edelbrock intakes.
300hp Apr 10th, 04, 8:35 PM i have an extra performer vortec intake im looking at selling if your interested. i only want about $50, they go for about 160 new.

You have mail.
fatlip Apr 11th, 04, 8:14 AM I have the Ederbrock RPM Vortec on my H.O 350 engine with a 650 speed demon and it works great. The car as has a B&M 350 turbo trans and 373 posi in rear. It pulls hard and fast. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Clyde_Maston Apr 11th, 04, 4:05 PM 300hp,
I am interested in the vortec. Just tell me where to send the money order. It should work fine for me as I don't plan to take my motor past 5500 rpm.

Do you still have the performer intake? Please let me know either way.
