Hello....

I was thinking of putting a cross hatch on my block and read a few posts here about doing it yourself. Seems simple enough. There are some things to consider like the right drill speed, using honing oil, CLEANING after the hone, and using the right tool. It was mentioned that a 320 grit would be my best bet. Now....I have a bore size of 4.155. All these flexhones seem to b 4.125 or 4 1/8. How do ya go about getting a 4.155 or can I use the 4 1/8? Seems like it would be a bit small and won't work.

What are your guys thoughts....?

I'd like to do as much of this rebuild myself. The boring of .030 over was done back in 1980 and has about 20K miles on it. There is still some of the cross hatch pattern from that rebuild showing. But I'm putting a new set of rings and I'd like it done.

Thanks for the help!

i myself use a 3 bar hone.

i like those better then the dingle ball hones.

i just honed out my sbc engine yesterday - doing just a basic rering and bearings, engine had 114,000 miles on it ran just fine but just freshening it up before i stick it in my suburban.

some may not appprove of how i hone mine out but i know my engines seal and dont smoke so i must do something right after 18 years

i just chuck my 3 bar hone into my black and decker drill and set it on the lowest speed spray some carb cleaner down the cylinder hole and slide the hone in and go to it. i shoot carb cleaner down the cylinder as needed while i hone. i might spend about 1-2 minutes per cylinder its really not long. i just repeat same in each hole.

i think the hone i use is a 220 grit.

i like the bar hones becauses you can adjust them as needed and you can use more or less tension if desired.

Thanks for the input ddeennis. I'm looking into getting one made from Osborn. I think they have to be special ordered. There's a company near me that is looking into it. I should hear back something in a day or two. It just may not be affordable.
