How does the loop mount? I have seen some that mount off of the trans crossmember instead of the bottom of the car, if you can post a pic maybe it would be easier to offer a suggestion. Just a tought

Smitty do you have an example (like a link to a pic, or a place that sells them) of that type of loop? I sort of need one and don't want holes in my floor, and I can't use the type that comes off the end of the trans tail because I have an aux overdrive that replaced my tail on my turbo 400..
I haven't heard of a crossmember mounted one though..
Sorry to steal the thread a little.
I had a comp engineering driveshaft "loop" that I couldn't fit in due to clearance (it was more like another crossmember, but whatever).

You better get one that bolts to the floor or to the frame rails. I'd hate to have one mounted to the rear trans mount and have it ruin the tail housing when you lose a u joint. I wouldnt trust a loop that was mounted by bolting it into aluminum. I bought one from METCO for my 72,hated to bolt it to the floor, but I'm worth it :D

I wonder if I could get one fabbed up if I found out the requirements. I had a custom trans crossmember made from extremely heavy boxed steel, and would have no bones about mounting something to that, stronger than the floor IMHO.

Smittyocat- Go to the OPGI website (www.opgi.com) under the online Chevelle catalog. They have the loop that bolts to the tranny mount holes on the trans crossmember for around $40 to $50 Bucks, depending on the tranny.

just so you know i was told by denny's driveshaft that your driveshaft WILL NOT catupult your car if it breaks, just dent and break a bunch of stuff!! i am probably going to use the comp engineering loop and weld it to my subframe connectors

Matt Matt, the specs are in the NHRA rule book. There are a couple variations that can be used. The one probably most widely used is just like the ones you see in the catalogs. They have to be within 6" of the end of the driveshaft 1/4" thick x 2" wide and fully encircle the shaft. There is an option for using tubing but I don't know what the requirements are off the top of my head. Your xmember sounds perfect for attaching it to.

The ones from opgi that mount on the tailshaft I would think would mess up your pinion angle. If you try to squeeze a piece of 1/4 steel between the mount and the tranny thats going to raise the rear of your tranny, therefore changing your pinion angle unfavorably. As far as the catapault goes, it doesn't matter if it will or won't, you can't race without one per the IHRA or NHRA rulebooks, so your better of finding one that will do the job correctly.
