: 454 Block options?

I'm pretty sure I'm in need of either a new block, or further boring out the one I have.

It's a '73 casting 454, and is already bored at 0.060". Is that the max? or can I go to 0.080" ?

If I can't bore it out more, what are my options for a replacment block (other than finding a '73 era block)? I'm pretty sure all the components of my engine are good, and I'll replace the pistons and rings (hopefully that's all).

Are any of the Gen V or Gen VI blocks interchangeable?
Are there any sources for 'new' blocks? I found a source for a VI block for $1275.

Any suggestions.
Anyone in the Indiana area have a 427/454 block for sale?

thanks,
Mike

.070 is a common overbore. My block is .070 (4.320 bore). I would bet your '73 block would go .100 to 4.350. Have it sonic checked.

Thanks! that is encouraging. I thought I'd been told 0.060" was the max.

73 should be a 289 casting and have nice thick cylinders. You should always have them sonic tested to guarantee it but they normally will go .100 over with ease and may take .125 over.

If its a 2 bolt main it should go .120" over, 4 bolt .100" is fairly safe. Mine (4 bolt) was .060" over and rusted when I acquired it, we took it out to .070", used Keith Black pistons.

And if you really want a different used block, your local craigslist is probably full of used motors for less than $600.00.

We just bored and honed one for a customer in PA and it sonic tested fine, But boring a BBC more then .060 should be sonic tested first.

I believe there is another one in the shop we aquired that will go .070 over that is a 4 bolt that maybe up for sale??
