Cardiac, It was another post started by Racer1320. It is all about BB power and how to make them work in our cars.

300hp, I believe SB heads are quite a bit different in runner design and combustion chamber configuration also.

But a good discussion none the less. Maybe all those 383/406 guys will chime in and put in all the input that Ed's post is creating!!!

Here's an interesting 350 buildup that deals with 'small' parts:

Use drinkin' straws as runners! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Seriously, the castings are so much smaller that even large sbc heads flow like ovals so I dont think the same result applies. Although, AFR heads have this "velocity" built into them.

But the dual plane, 700 cfm, and 1.625" headers are part of the deal.

I agree that the head is small enough were the velocity is not the large issue for small blocks, but when purchasing an after market head and/or porting it is as important. Most small block heads, early vintage castings couldn't support 380 hp without bigger valves and port work. A small block has a smaller bore and has to work harder than a big block(more rpm) to move the same amount of air. So in a performance stance with a small block bigger is better, either bigger cubes heads ect. A N/A small block always will need to be more radicall than a N/A big block to achieve near the same results

427L88 breathing through drinking straws i like that. i had a 383 in a all steel 68 chevelle except hood. roll cage full interior even back seat exhaust all the way out the back. it ran 7.30's at 95mph 1/8 mile.
i dont know how many people walked by and asked what size big block was in it. when told them it was a 10.2 to 1 383 half would'nt believe me until i raised the hood. it had a set of dart iron eagles with 72cc chambers on it. i am building a 406 for it now.
all these posts about big blocks running 10s and 11s wheres all the smallblock guys?

Right here man I'm a die hard small chevy fan. I'll let you know if my little solid cammed 350 sees a 10.99, its all in the sixty feet and it works hard to motivate 3400lb's down the track. it's current best N/A is 11.40 @ 118 street trim. Some testing is coming with slicks and new suspension, we shall see, a ten is reachin' but it will be close. Thats a stout 383 you had racer.

68Racer,

Another SBC guy here. Give me a few weeks and I'll have some better numbers to post.

7.68@91 1/8th mile blazing the DOT's to about 330'. I'm looking for some 11.30-11.40's from my 383 in the next few weeks with a little tuning and traction. Only got a few passes on a whole new drivetrain so I've still got some bugs to get ironed out.

I read the previous post by "Racer1320" and couldn't agree with him more! The statement regarding velocity is presicly what the Fast-Burn heads on my ZZ430 is all about. Sure it's a SB, but none the less the therory's are the same.
My best 1/4 mile time is 12.74 @ 116mph and all I've done is play around with the timing and carb without adding any extra cash.
It's decievingly powerfull as it idles real smooth at 750rpm http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif: http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
