: Air cleaner sticking out of the hood
White Lightning Apr 28th, 08, 10:53 AM I have a 307 69 chevelle malibu that i swapped a 396/402 into. Right now the hood hardly closes with out a air cleaner on it. I bought a 396 ss hood from goodmark but i doubt that will have much more clearence than my stock hood. My question is how dumb is cutting a hole in the hood and letting the air cleaner stick out( kinda different but neat:confused:). I think the cowl hoods are cool but dont really want one on my car. The engine has a rpm performer intake and a barry grant carb 850 on it. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.:noway:
strangler Apr 28th, 08, 11:19 AM Lower rise intake and a dropped base air cleaner. Please don't cut a round hole in either of the hoods.....
Jimmy P Apr 28th, 08, 11:21 AM Did you change the motor mounts before dropping the BBC in?
White Lightning Apr 28th, 08, 11:27 AM yes 396 ss motor mounts.

Ditto... I think that style went out sometime in the early 80's.....
It is your car however, they get more precious everyday. Tuck all that muscle and breathing apparatus under the hood.
Pro67Chevy Apr 28th, 08, 1:11 PM Something sounds wrong. I know guys running BBCs in '68-'69s with an inch worth of spacers and a 3" element with drop base.
You said you have the right motor mounts but do you have the right brackets under the motor mounts? Also, if you have energy suspension mounts they come in both "short" and "tall" styles. Check your part #.
White Lightning Apr 28th, 08, 1:41 PM i got a local garage with a lift and pit to swap it out but i bought all the parts needed for the swap and i didnt get different brackets. Back in the day (way before my time)he did a lot of small 2 big block swaps. He didnt think he needed them apparently, bet thats my problem.
Alwhite00 Apr 28th, 08, 6:59 PM yes 396 ss motor mounts.
Well at least you didn't just get the regular 396 mounts. :D

658Chevy Apr 28th, 08, 7:11 PM I had the same problem with my '69 and a 454. I solved it by getting a 1" drop base air cleaner. It will fit with about a 1/2" clearance. If you still have problems, switch to a shorter air filter. I switched out carbs from a Demon to an Edelbrock and even with the drop base I had to go from a 3" air filter to a 2 1/4" (needed a spacer on top due to the banjo fitting for the fuel line)
It's hard to find the shorter filters in paper, but K&N makes a bunch of different sizes. I initially couldn't find one by using BBC as search parameters, but I did find one intended for an import make that fit .
Don't cut a hole in your hood.
One more thing -- don't cut a hole in your hood.
Just in case you missed it, don't cut...

Come on man, thats just piling on.;)
White Lightning Apr 28th, 08, 8:17 PM Well apparently the air cleaner stickin out of the hood is a big no no. All that nice shiney crome out on top.:D As for the motor mounts the parts guy said "official 396 SS motor mounts":hurray:. I like official. I doubt i can fit a smaller air filter on it as the hood kinda sits on the "little pointy thing" on the top of the carb.
BlueSS454 Apr 28th, 08, 9:18 PM The engine mounts are for 350 and 396 engines. 307's have their own engine mounts and frame mounts and WILL NOT accept 350/396 engine mounts. You would have had to change the frame mounts as well.
67shovel Apr 29th, 08, 8:44 AM You shouldn't stick the air cleaner out of the hood because:
1. the rain issue. Will ruin your air cleaner pronto.
2. Crud on motor. The stuff that didn't get sucked into your air cleaner will fall on your intake manifold.
3. It ruins a 40 year old hood
4. If you stick something through your hood it better be a blower or injector stacks, not an air cleaner
5. It looks wrong to anybody with experience with these cars.
drptop70ss Apr 29th, 08, 12:54 PM If you used the 307 frame stands then put 307 engine mounts on the block, that will get the engine in the correct place. 350/396 mounts are not wide enough to fit over the 307 stands and would sit too high if pried open to fit over them. I have done it many times, you just have to keep the correct stands with the correct mounts.
