if you wanted to run 10 sec 1/4mi et's on pump gas and still have street manners too, and you only had $5000 to spend on the engine, would you build a sbc or a bbc? on another board i go to this has been debated for about a week now. i'm a sbc guy at heart, but i feel that the easiest, cheapest way to go would be to build a bbc, but it seems that i'm alone over there in thinking this. am i crazy? i just don't think a sbc can achieve that goal cheaper or easier than a 454 could. oh yeah, it must be N/A, no power adders. to me it's a no brainer, but nobody else on that board agrees with me. so what do you guys think?

I'd definately go big block, especially if we're talking a heavy Chevelle :D a smallblock could do it,but not sure you can get all that machine work done and come in at or under 5 g's

Definetly a Big Block...$5K close call but can be done.

Street Manners..that's objective....but to me I didn't like 3.90 gears on the highway so I went and built a big inch baby motor and use 3.42 gears. I also have a tight converter, my car is so mellow when cruising...2800 at 55 and 3200 at 65....5950 RPM at the 1320 stripe at 125 mph.

If you like 4.11's on the street and many people do...then it can definetly be done within your budget. But don't forget the other components to go along with that mill to reach the 10's too.

I hope you go for it..

I'm a BBC guy but, I think you can do it with a sbc if you have the correctly set up car, converter and chassis.

as much as i love my sbc motor
BIG BLOCK
you will have twice that in a sbc and only if the car and combo are right on you may see 10s

454, 10:1, good cam, and a 250 shot smile.gif Oh yeah, some gears and probably a really good chassis will probably get you there...

my freind built a buget 454 under 4k 2 bolt block 049 heads cast crank 3/8 rods keith black 10 to 1 540 solid cam team g and a 850 double pumper car runs 1080s 1/4 mile. not counting the tci tranny with a 4500 stall 12 bolt rear with a spool and 411s. 3 years ago and still running strong (70 chevelle)...mike

yeah, the point i kept trying to make is that a 454 could use stock crank, rods, and factory oval port heads with a flat tappet cam. a sbc would have to run a $1200-$1500 rotating assembly, $1200+ set of heads, another $1000+ for a roller set up, and to still run on pump gas in a 3200+ lbs street car would be difficult for a sbc to achieve for under $5000. incidentally, i only had about $2500 in my 454 and it ran 7.20's 1/8mi @3900+lbs and had same combo in an 80 malibu that went 10.60's in the 1/4mi @just under 3500lbs. needless to say everyone else's junk was my treasure on that 454. alot of it was used parts. ;)

Well then , you've been there , done that. Why debate it on another board? Proceed with confidence, don't let anyone stand in your way!

I would go with the 496... Use a mild nitrous cam with plenty of lob sep... (112) Make sure your compression is nice and mild 9.5 is about as high as I would go if it's a Daily Driver. If it's just a take out and cruise on Sun. vehicle then I would go with about 10.5. As long as you put forged pistons in it. You should be safe up to a 300 shot.

Shannon, man, you're freaking out, 300 shots, twin Prochargers! Dyin' to see how the "mega rat" turns out. Aw, I love it man, don't get me wrong, but m71 said no power adders.

Hey M71, bet you didn't have good 4.25" cranks available back then!

Anyone around here run a 496 10.5:1, with factory rect ports (read CHEAP) and a solid roller???

Know OF at least one local 1/8 mi racer that does and he's deep in the 6s. In a 1982 Buick of all things. Suspect the whole rig is low budget, i.e. $7500-8500.
