: WHO MAKES THE BEST FIBERGLASS HOOD???
Robert G Jan 26th, 04, 9:35 PM I will be in the market for a glass hood , with a scoop or cowl, what is the ideal cowl hight. i don't want to get to crazy ,but i want it to catch the eye. i looking for pics and info.
I WANT THE BEST FIT AND IT MUST BE A BOLT ON smile.gif
InsuranceGuy Jan 26th, 04, 10:51 PM Harwood has the best fit & finish(top & bottom)I've seen. I bought one of their 4" cowl hoods and it bolted right on without any cutting or grinding.
My 4" cowl is a little obtrusive so I think a 2" cowl would be about right for a daily driver.
If you get a fiberglass hood don't forget to
order the light-weight hood springs.

Bob West Jan 27th, 04, 12:11 AM I second the motion for Harwood,,,show quality finish underside. I had to clearance the back edge of the hood for the windshield wipers, but thats it,perfect fit, beautiful hood graemlins/thumbsup.gif
John_R Jan 27th, 04, 9:34 AM I will tell you who makes one of poorer ones and it's the antonym of restricted , lol...
Had a question in the Harwoods, since I will have to be getting rid of my custom one...are there any choices other than cowl induction that they do? Nothing wrong with that sort of hood, just seems that's the only type out there...one of the reasons I went with the above-mentioned supplier, was cause they made me one with an AMX scoop on it; still haven't seen another like it...this was also in 1995, before I heard all about them and witnessed firsthand...actually, to be fair, I can't say it was 100% crap, but there are many choices out there now...regardless, I am looking for something different, yet somewhat affordable and right the first time around...any suggestions for that?
wes migletz Jan 27th, 04, 1:42 PM John,
I bet if you contacted VFN fiberglass they would make a hood with any scoop you want. I just ordered a scoop from them to cover the hole in my vette's hood, and they made it at a reduced height per my request. In my case, it was no additional charge. www.vfnfiberglass.com (http://www.vfnfiberglass.com)
VFN has plenty of OE style scoops in various sizes. HTH
turbo Jan 28th, 04, 11:30 PM look here for pics of the harwood pin on 4" on my 68, At first I thought it was too tall but it really grew on me, I like it now.

Redrum Jan 29th, 04, 12:09 AM Glastec makes a very good quality hood that fits correctly. Follow the links to picture........
Removed Jan 29th, 04, 7:16 AM My vote is for Glastec too. Good quality workmanship.
TimC Jan 29th, 04, 11:52 AM Another vote for the Harwood
I put the 4" on my 68. My body guy said it was the highest quality glass hood he has seen.

kjett Jan 29th, 04, 12:13 PM The fitment on my Glasstek hood wasn't all that great. The hood bows up in the middle and doesn't lay flat. The panel alignment is fine but the hood sticks up higher than the fenders on both side. Several others I've spoken with using these hoods have had the same issues. For that reason I wouldn't recommend them for those with 66'-67' Chevelles.
feedphillipnow Jan 30th, 04, 6:25 AM I had a post about the fiberglass fenders but decided to go with GM steel! The hood on the otherhand im pretty sold on a good quality fiberglass Im glad this post was started. I like that 4" on your 68' TURBO! Nice paint color too, what is it? What are some pro's and cons on the latch hinge style and pin/bolt on? Seems it would be alot cleaner to have it without the big ol' bulky hinges and springs? eh? :D Whats Harwood's cost for the 71's w/ 4" Hmmm

feedphillipnow Jan 30th, 04, 6:28 AM Hey TURBo, from the looks of things you did the paint yourself in the garage, I noticed all the windows and things were covered. How'd that go? Im prepping to do my home PPG job.
Whittaker Jan 30th, 04, 6:10 PM My Glasstek hood on my 66 is that way, bowed. They told me to try all kinds of stuff which didn't change the bow in it. They did tell me if I have a stock steel hood that fits right to bring/send it to them and they would give me the first one off of a mold of it. Tory or something like that is the owner and I hope he makes it right when I get one up to them. I'm in IL and 2 to 3 hours from them so I hope to get to it one of these days snd they do make it right.
You might also call them and tell them yours is also like that. Maybe we can get ones replaced that are in the same boat.
Thanks,
Whittaker
Robert G Jan 30th, 04, 6:38 PM YA. i live in AURORA IL. i'm about 10 mins away from GLASSTEK .they had made a hood for me befor
it was OK it fit ok , there was a gap between the hood and the fenders, and the cowl scoop was alittle flexable for my tast ,so i added glass to stiffen it up, hay at lest there was NO SHIPPING COST.
AND I was at a very fair price ;) lower than you would pay on ebay or othere sits :D
turbo Jan 31st, 04, 9:19 PM my car is painted in ppg single stage urethane
code WA 128 A Dark cloisonne Poly, used on '94-96'
corvettes. jegs sells a pin on one for the 70'-72' cars for about 260, "show quality" underside :D
bolt on are around 400 bucks. I like the pin on for the convenience of working on the engine , ect but they can be a pain it the butt aslo, its just whatever you prefer. As far as the garage paint job, I built a booth out of 2x4's and plastic, had 2 inlet fans and 3 exhaust fans(box fans) used a 3M full face respirator.(do it when the neighbors are gone!)
As far a dirt and crud goes, there was almost none in the paint(wet the floor) Paint job isn't all that great but looks pretty good from 10 ft away.
Bob West Jan 31st, 04, 9:50 PM As far as pin on or bolt on...pin on is great for working on the engine as Turbo said, but at the track it don't take much wind to take it out of your hands,or a slip and you drop it..there goes a corner. I've had both and prefer the bolt on...even though summit sells them for around 439,there is also a 75.00 trucking charge,so its an expensive ordeal. I know from experience, bolt on is not fool proof either, when you forget the hood pins the hood tends to come up on launch. I'm on my second Harwood hood graemlins/sad.gif
feedphillipnow Feb 1st, 04, 1:07 AM Well the paint looks nice, similar to the 2002 Honda blue PPG I might use. My paint is a 10-20 footer at looking good smile.gif If even, especially now that it's prepping for paint. I'd like a good "5 foot looker" at least! I didnt even realise how great it would be for working on the engine! The first thing I pictured was needing some oil or a minor emergency at a gas station and needing to take it off, seemed like it may be wierd to do solo? As for forgetting to bolt it down I'd say that would never happen to me! BUT!! When a I had my 69' monster blazer a few years ago that fat convertable top, a good few hundred lbs wasnt bolted to the front window frame, guess what happened ;) thats right... 80 miles an hour and this entire thing FLYS off on the freeway, lucky it was late it would have killed! It was gone the next day, I couldnt get it alone.
I think I'll go pin on.
feedphillipnow Feb 1st, 04, 1:30 AM From JEGS "Lift-Off Fiberglass Hoods (Non-Bolt-On)" What do they mean by non bolt on? Non bolt on to hinges? They word it funny. But from what Ive gathered im assuming these are the ones that bolt on with a locker in each corner? It seems would be a LIFT OFF, BOLT ON HOOD... hm, fishy.... $269 though , not bad.
turbo Feb 1st, 04, 9:20 AM I would call them lift offs, they are cheaper because they are not quite as strong and don't have the anchor points for hinge bolts moulded in.
I lift mine off by myself all the time, they are not heavy. I keep a blanket in the trunk and throw it on top the roof then I grab the hood and set it on the roof. You have to be very diligent in always checking those 4 pins everytime you drive it though or one day you will forget and bye bye hood! Its funny how spoiled you get working on them with no hood, Had a friends chevelle in the garage a while back and the first thing I did was hit my head on the hood when we were working on the motor. About that color of blue, there are a couple of other ones that I really liked, one is used on mazdas called lazer blue mica, the other is a dodge color called patriot blue(its a bit darker)
Robert G Feb 1st, 04, 12:01 PM Dose anyone have picks of there car with a pin on hood ? i would like to see how you guy keep the hood on . is it hard to do your self? tongue.gif

I gave Glasstek my hard earned money in hopes that I would receive a quality product, not to become part of some R&D effort while they try and science out the fitment of their products. Next time you talk to Glasstek tell them I said their 66' glass hoods SUCK!
turbo Feb 1st, 04, 5:51 PM Robert, I will see if I can get some pics of
mine up in the next day or so
Robert G Feb 1st, 04, 5:53 PM THANKS THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL, graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Bob West Feb 1st, 04, 7:10 PM When I had the pin on,I just had a hood pin at all four corners. That hood was unlimited...
feedphillipnow Feb 2nd, 04, 1:35 AM Well I havent heard anything bad about the Harwood JEGS pin ons, it sounds like gold times to pop it off and work on the engine graemlins/thumbsup.gif I think I'll order me one of those next weekend if the cashflow allows me. 4" induction should about do it :D
turbo Feb 3rd, 04, 9:40 AM ok here are a few pics, the front two are installed on the cowl support. I used carrige bolts next to each pin to adjust the height.

From experience it takes more than 4 points to hold one down ( atleast on my hood). I have 12 Dzus's on mine and it started to bow between fastners along the front sides at the long end of the track last year. I have had it on there for 7 yrs now. It wasnt real difficult to set up. Also what I have is considered a " Drag Race " Hood so I am sure its not as stout as the Street Hoods. It came from Creative Glas. I had also purchased one from Unlimited, the finish side didnt look bad, but the underside took quite a bit of work to get to look decent. I never did use that hood due to the way Creative Glas makes their Front Clips, they're set up like a Camaro at the Front and go all the way back to the windsheild so you cant use the Cowl or wipers.
feedphillipnow Feb 3rd, 04, 4:03 PM I think that looks really nice for single stage, everyone is scaring me out of it versus CC/Base coat PPG either way though. What types of pins are those? Thats how mine will be setup :D not bad at all
turbo Feb 3rd, 04, 7:56 PM camlocs or dzus fasteners are avery nice way to do it! I may do that with mine in the future, 4 seems to be enough for mine but it might not be a bad idea to use 4 in the back, 2 on each side of the scoop. You can get the pins from summit or jegs as well as the quarter turn fasteners if you do it that way. I am no expert but if I was to be spraying a solid color, I would not hesitate to use a single stage urethane! Metallics are much harder to spay out evenly in a ss, bc/cc is probably the way to go for those colors.
