Hello all just a general question about the effects of a power brake booster for my "new" 68 chevelle ss that I just bought. Can you guys give me some input with regards to these units and if they make a significant difference to the braking. I have rear drum and front disc but not power. NPD sell these brake boosters for about $130 plus core charge. Do they make a significant difference or would I be wasting my money? Also how hard would the install be given I have moderate technical skills. Thanks

I posted the same question in brakes and suspension. Never got an answer either. I did a search on powere booster and didn't really find the answer. I've been doing a search on the web and gathered some info. Some articles sound like they are good and easy to install, and some articles sound like its a pain in the a** to install. So I'm still not convinced that I want to tackle it yet.

You will need new hard lines from the master cylinder to the distribution block. Other than that, it's a pretty easy install. However, upon removing the master cylinder and installing the booster, you will notice the postion of the U bracket that goes on to the brake pedal bracket. When the booster is installed, it will be at an angle and will require you to install the U bracket on the lower hole on the brake pedal.
Also, take into consideration the size of your camshaft. If you have a radical cam, you may not have enough vacuum to properly operate the booster. You will need to hook up the booster to a manifold vacuum cicuit such as one at the base of the carbureator or the fitting on the back of the intake manifold.
As far as it making a difference in the braking, you will notice it will be significantly easier than with manual brakes.

Thats great thanks for the input...Im a little worried about the cam situation as it appears to have a little bit of a lumpy idle but I don't think its radical as you say so I think I'll be ok...cheers

Run a vacuum check on your motor. That will let you know how radical your cam is. 10" -12" is about the lowest you want to have before you go to an aux. pump or canister to bring the vacuum up for your booster. Front disk/ rear drum combos. really love power boosters. If your car stops good with the combo. you have now, wait until you install the P.B. As for the installation process, I think Tom covered that pretty well. Just take your time.

Before you drop the coin on it you should consider that a booster only assists in pushing the pedal. Thus it makes it easier for you to press the brake pedal. It does not stop the car any faster.
Don't get me wrong I like power brakes... I just dont want you thinking it will stop faster...
