44 days until I run this horse at the track...June 06 at Bremerton.

It's been said if you want your goals to come true, tell the world and the world will hold you accountable. Well there it is, hold me to the cross.

Actually, I started this thread for anyone to list what's holding them back from making it to the track. After reading Dave's post last night it got me to thinking about the stress and pressure about getting the car done. I've been poking around at this thing for the last 2 1/2 years, and it's time I showed some results.

So I made a short list of the minimums I need to accomplish to make it by the 6th of June. Anybody want to add their to do list feel free. I figured if I wrote it down, and checked it off as I go, there is a really good chance I'll make it all happen. Call this thread the countdown.

Things I have to do...

* Install 8 dzus fasteners for my frontend
* Fab 2 lengths of tubing for rad to firewall support
* Loom electrical and have it checked by someone that knows what the heck is going on
* bolt bumpers on and paint them
* install new windshield and rear glass
* hook up neutral safety switch
* buy and install 5pt harness
* buy and install front shocks and have front end checked out
* buy and install roll cage padding
* Fab some sort of bracket for fuel regulator setup
* attach drivers door panel and both door's handles cranks etc
* finish sanding out hood scoop and frontend  I hate bodywork
* sand mud and splash car with some el cheapo flat black
* buy a helmet and a firesuit...for no reason other than a battery, a fuel cell, and a nitrous bottle in the trunk, all wrapped up in a 40 year old car ;)
* install driveshaft safety loop
* book the time off work, buy a 24 of Kokanee, load 'er on the trailer and head for the border.:)

Piece of cake. :D Darryl could pull this off in a weekend...I've got 44 days.

Checked wiring for alternator and checked charging system...all good.

First time I've got into the throttle and man, does it go ! Wound it out a bit in 1st gear, grabbed 2nd and nailed it...sideways for about 20' and hooked right up. I couldn't hear the tires over the open headers spitting out the horsepower, but the boys at the shop said the thing was lighting them up pretty much the whole time I had my foot in it.:D

Didn't lift a finger on the old girl yesterday or today. However, my parts order came in today and looks like some fun installs. Got a pair of Lakewood 90/10's for the front, 30' of Moroso roll cage padding, spreader bars and ARP valve cover bolts, some really sick polished aluminum wire looms, and a 5pt harness.

Won't be able to do much for the next couple of days, as the good wife and I are headed to Vegas for a couple of days. Yeah, Baby.

Hope I come home with some spending money.

No progress to report, but I did make it back from Vegas with my shirt...and both my kidneys. :)

I broke even on the blackjack, but my wife was a total sniper on the slots. I couldn't believe it. I didn't think it was possible to take money out of Vegas.

We did have a total riot and it was a nice break from the day to day grind. Met up with Mike, 66SSFan, and we made a trip to the Gun Store, and blasted off a bunch of caps. If you like shooting, you'll love this place. http://www.thegunstorelasvegas.com/rental.htm :yes::yes: Where else does a guy get to hammer off rounds with your choice of machine guns ?

We also made a tour of the car museum at the Imperial Palace Casino, many thanks to his sister-in-law for the tickets, and his wife for putting up with us for a couple hours in there. http://autocollections.com/

The best part of the museum tour was having Mike there. He is a walking encyclopedia of information of just about every car in that place. Real value adder. Thanks Mike.

Pretty bagged out, though. After pulling an all-niter and flying out of Vegas at midnight, we didn't get into Victoria until 9:30 this morning. At least one of our two suitcases made it home. Hopefully the wife's bag will show up soon.

Back into the swing of things. Tonite only had a small amount of time to spend, but did manage to get the new front shocks installed, and the plug wire looms installed.

These looms are kind of a twisted story. My parts guy at work likes to spend my money for me, and I'm glad he does; otherwise I'd never buy anything for my Chevelle. :)

He randomly orders me the wire looms, and when they come in he is all jacked up. He's been following my progress on intermittent views on his parts counter computer on my Team Chevelle posts.

He goes to me, "You've gotta get those things engraved with 'OutCast' and the Punisher Skull !" He's really big into airsoft and paintball warfare. He's got a paintball mask with camo background and a flat black Punisher Skull face on it. Very Creepy. Freak you out kind of thing if you're battling him out on some bush map paintball game.

So, I oblige, and get my engraving lady to hit the looms with some gothic font, and I think it looks pretty cool. I'm too cheap to buy vanity license plates so these things will do. She's a daughter of an old time roundy round racer, so she kind of gets it.

The funny thing is she says to me, " Why bother doing this ? It's just going on the motor and nobody will see it ?" To which I replied, " That's OK, I know it's there, and I like it." :)

So maybe I should be posting this in Lowrider.com, but this is just one of those little things that makes rodding, racing, wrenching kind of fun.

Make it fast, make it fun, make it yours. ;)

OK, Dave, you busted me. ;)

After two weeks of my prior mentioned parts man working me over for a real ignition system, I finally caved today and spent the wife's Vegas winnings on a new distributor and wires....sshhh...she doesn't know yet. Although Mike heard me ask her if it was ok if I bought a new distributor right after she cashed out the $450 slot machine chit.

So I just layed down for that distributor that you can set everything inside of the cap...advance, total, rev limiter, etc. I figured why mess around with my weak points set-up, or spend a bunch of $$$ getting a basic setup when I really knew deep down that the pro setup was what I wanted/needed. This is the one from MSD http://www.msdignition.com/dist_83_8394.htm

I'd feel like a total tool if I blew my motor up because of a little too much squeeze and bad spark or over rev. Help me guys, I need to justify laying out the cake for this one. :(

The ignition was really the last major missing link in my setup to really lay down the beats on my ride, so I figure this should be it. I don't want to miss Hoss's Dyno Party, or have a shabby showing at Bremerton the night before due to cheesy equipment. Don't get me wrong, the car still looks really bad, but I hope you will oversee it's ultra-crappy appearance if I can lay down some decent numbers. :)

Got the driver's door panel installed and spent some time staring at it in the garage saying to myself, " Hey, I could run this whale tomorrow if I had to." So I'm pretty dang sure you are going to see it on the 6 of June. What's left of it we'll do some nasty burnouts at Hoss's and then dyno the remains. :D

Got a bunch of fiddly little stuff done today.

- filled in all the old hood pin holes and extra holes in 'glass front end with microfibre and re-inforced lower fender area

- got some 3" muffler pipe and did some pre-lim sizing. I am going to go with 24" of pipe off the collector then into a pair of Dynomax Ultraflow's, then out on a 45 degree to just in front of the rear tires

-fabbed up a mounting plate for my rad overflow ( no inner fenders to hang it off), and hung it off my homebrewed rad support rods with those rubber insulated horseshoe clips. Holds tight with shock proof mount

- used same clips and got a sweet mounting setup for my fuel reg, nice and snug and shockproof also

- got my neutral safety switch all cased out. Just need to get heavier gauge wire tomorrow to finish that job

- gutted the old rubber urethane goop in my windshield area and cleaned up, ready for the new window

- booked the car trailer for June 6th weekend from my friend that owns the trailer

- plugged in all my headlight wiring to find out none of it works. :( I do see alot of cut off ground wires from the back of the rad support though. Maybe I'll just start grounding everything and see if I can start a fire.

That's it for today. Should have more accomplished tomorrow. The new distributor shows up tomorrow. :hurray:

Did stop by my friend's house on the way home...the same friend with the 10 sec 65 Nova. He's put a fresh 400 small block stroker in it. I think its about 420-ish cubes.

He ran 10.20 last year on a 327 with 175 of nitrous. He's stepped up to a 250 shot for this engine. He's hoping for low 9's. He figures mid 500hp on the engine alone. Should make for a quick ride.

I'm going to check him out running it in Victoria this Sunday. See if he can scrape the paint off the rear bumper.

It's a BB, hopefully you have a 900, plus, CCA battery too. If not, you'll have issues. I've never had turning over issues since I ensured I run a High CCA battery. My 69 WILL NOT turn over with a regular 650CCA battery with even a simple drive to the gas station. Doesn't matter with a high amp battery, always turns over

Did some more bondo work on the front end tonight. It's starting to look pretty decent. Should hopefully have the fasteners installed by the end of the weekend, and have it all primed or flat blacked by then.

Cleaned up some wiring inside the car and managed to install the 5 point. It's a good fit and adds a measure of safety. Was a bonus to get a set with June 2008 tags. Good for a full 2 years.

Things I have to do...[/B]

* install driveshaft safety loop
* book the time off work, buy a 24 of Kokanee, load 'er on the trailer and head for the border.:)

Piece of cake. :D Darryl could pull this off in a weekend...I've got 44 days.

All that I have left from my list is :

* install dzus fasteners and hang front end hopefully by tomorrow nite
* paint and bolt on rear bumper sometime this week
* get windshield and rear window installed Thursday
* install roll cage padding I could do this on the ferry boat ride
* sand and paint car I'll do what I can...at least one color by the 6th
* buy a helmet and a suit after payday...money tree has shed all its leaves
* grab box of Kokanee available enroute to the border
* install exhaust system Thursday also if time permits

Wow, the list has shrunk a fair bit. Even got extra things done and a couple left to do...distributor, wires, mini starter...but I'm going to wait until I get the exhaust hooked up to keep Janet happy. It's not that I don't like cops, it's just that I don't like surprise visits from them. :noway:

Maybe if any of you guys think of something I'm missing for tech, you could mention it. I think I have it covered, but I'd sure hate to get all the way down there and be told I couldn't run. That would create a serious pout - on.:pout: My only concern would be not having big studs in the rear axles if I want to run with my slicks ? What's the deal there ? The guy that the slicks and rear end came from said he ran it as is, so hopefully I'll be able to, also.

Thanks, John

Gary, getting close to doing a flight test with this thing. Trying like a madman to get it together for June 6 at Bremerton.

Did a bunch of work around the yard today, and went to Victoria to watch my friend Gary run his new engine in his Nova. It's only a 440' track, but with the new engine he was running 4.56 time at 82 mph. Don't know what that would convert to in the quarter.

He made it to the final, only to have to bail as his electric water pump switch failed. He was running strong all day, too.

One thing for the Chevelle though, Gary gave me his spare driving suit. So one more thing off the list.

Oh come on,,,,at least bring it ready to run,,,,just in case you get a wild hair. It may just be the ticket to pummle a few trash talkers that give you a good close run motor to motor.

Kinda like Joel (evil mouse) and my run against each other. It would have been a dang close race motor to motor but I wasn't about to have a close one with him. Kick'em in the jimmies when you can. Smacking him by 3/4 of a second felt great and will likely be the only good smacken i give him with my 350. He'll be full squeeze next time and I'll be in trouble. Maybe the BB needs to go in.

11 days...

Bittersweet success today.

Installed the new MSD distributor and Blaster 2 coil following the directions to the " T ", had a secondary opinion from 489 Brian, ( thanks tons, Brian ), and absolutely no spark. Added the 10 gage ignition hot 12 volts wire, and no go. We tried everything...twice...and no cigar.

Swapped old coil back in and still no go. Finally just put old distributor back in and kept the Blaster coil in.

So I've got nice wires made up, and a 2 minute coil change-over done after going at it since noon. :) Did get some really good grounds connected from the rad support to frame to engine block. That and a bit of headlight wiring so I think that part is coming along.

Real success with bodywork though. My friend Cal came over and finished up the welds on the driver's 1/4, and now it's ready for a bit of mud.

FourEightyNine

I had a GM tech and parts man from work here doing it. They went through everything. I checked on here for hei conversions, and followed those recommended steps. Re-checked the settings on the distributor 1 and 2 switches, reset the rev limiter, checked every wire connection...it's super basic, only a 3 wire harness to hookup.

Still...no go. No spark at all.

Any ideas other than the chance of a bad distributor program board ?

Thanks.

Just simulate all the connection's with a battery, a coil, and the new dizzy. Use the ground on the battery for ground. You could use a plug wire, and a plug, with a wire to neg on the battery to see if it spark's.

Good talking with you also, Dave.

After talking, I went back and tried some more, and eventually I got some spark from it. All very inconsistently. The top of the coil started crackling with the rotation of the dist., and I would get an intermittent spark at the plug.

The more I spun it, the more regularly I would get spark at the plug. However, it never consistently sparked every 360 degrees. It sparked about 10 times in a row before it crapped out for about 3 or 4 revolutions before it sparked again.

I checked the coil wire and contacts, seemed ok. I made another coil wire just to be sure, and got same results. Seems very strange with a circuit board to be so intermittent.

We're going to send it back, get a replacement one, bench test it first, and if all looks good, stick it in and hope it goes.

Just got in from slopping some more weight...I mean bondo...;) on this thing.
On my original starter, there are 2 small wires and the main battery cable. One of the small wires, blue or purple, looks like it goes to ignition, and the other wire is the fabric covered wire that goes to my coil.

With the HEI I'm installing, don't I just lose the fabric covered wire anyways ? And add my 10 gauge 12 volt wire from the fuse block to the coil.

That would just leave the blue/purple wire to the starter, and the hot battery cable. On the picture below, do I add the little wire to the spade terminal, and my battery cable to one of the 2 big terminals ?

No instructions came with the starter or a paperclip for that matter, Dave. What you see in the picture is what I've got, plus a couple new starter bolts.

Do these things need a heat shield, or are they good to go as is ?

Thanks for your ideas. Appreciated as always. :)

Now, clock the starter to the proper position. Just jack the car up, and get under there to see what's best, really easy with the little bugger.:D Once You get the position correct, mount the starter with the two bolts. Now pry out the gear, till it mesh's to the flywheel. When meshed, you should be able to stick a paperclip inbetween the gear's. Between the tip of one gear/to the valley of the other. What did you use as a ground, to get it to spark on the bench?

Maybe try running your ground to that same spot while the dizzy is in the motor?

Just tested it with my multimeter. It's a good ground. Even ran another wire to the battery itself to be sure.

Power on both sides of the coil...about 13.06 volts. Battery is starting to get low. It's on the charger as we speak.

I sure am getting good at swapping out distributors and lining up the oil pump driveshaft. :D

Just put the old ugly points distributor back in...fired right up. Bet Janet liked that one at 1230 am. :hurray:

This little episode has got me thinking for sure. I just want to put a basic hei in the car instead. Maybe this is just too fancy for what I really need. A decent new small cap hei and some curve thrown at it, and good enough. I can't waste anymore time with this fancy pants stuff.

Here's the crazy part. I put the dist. back on the bench, hooked everything up exactly the same as I last had it hooked up in the car, spun the shaft by hand at whatever rpm that would be...the little bugger sparked half a dozen times, all the while crackling in the top of the coil !

If it would spark ...even intermittently...by hand, why wouldn't it under much higher rpm at cranking speed?

I sure as heck don't know. It's 1 am, and I'm wiped. Gotta tackle other projects tomorrow. Can't fart around wasting time on this any longer.

Thanks for your suggestions tonight.

Sorry to hear about the problem with your distributor John.

When I ran my engine on the frame only for the first time, I had a problem with spark.....well, when I put my weatherproof connectors together for the MSD distributor, somehow I put male connectors on both ends, so it would intermittently spark, then heat up causing resistance and stop working.....chased that one for a couple of days until I pulled the connectors apart. I felt so stupid, I couldn't believe I did that....but I was glad it WAS simple. So, just a thought....do you have anything like what I did in your setup?

It's a 3 wire male/female plug. Red, orange, black connector. It seems bulletproof. I just feel if this thing is this touchy out of the box, what's it going to be like down the road...or on the side of the road?

I just phoned MSD and got the response..."It's probably the circuit board," But twice in a row ? "Possible," he said.

Ok then. Plan B. Brett, nothing wrong with gm hei. I'm just a little tight at the firewall with a bunch of various wires and gauge senders. And I'd like to stay with the smaller cap if possible.

At this stage, I just feel like throwing some weights and springs at my stock points unit and recurve it and run with that until I do some research on this whole hei deal. At least my stocker works everytime.

Ok. Onwards and upwards.

Should work well john, probably don't need the vacuum advance can though. For racing just set your initial advace and tune your mechanical advance for the total. Shoot for something like 16 initial and 16 mechanical all in by 2500 rpm and plug the vacuum line going to the canister. It's not seeing any vacuum at WOT anyway.

Installed the mini starter tonight. It really cranks nicely. Only trouble is I have to pull it out again, as my headers don't fit now. One of the down tubes hits it and keeps the headers from bolting up.

So rather than bash the daylights out of the header, I'll take the grinder to the starter. Hope this is ok to do. I need to clearance about 1/2" off the outboard base of it. So that will be tomorrow night.

Got the Crane conversion for my points distributor, and measured my coils resistance. The MSD Blaster 2 has about 1.4 ohms resistance, and my stocker was at 3.5 ohms. Therefore I need to add a ballast resistor to the positve coil wire.

While doing all this, I could smell heat coming from somewhere, and grabbed the bundle of wires coming from the fuse block...very hot with the key on the ignition. Almost burn your hand hot. :( I checked the voltage at the positive on the coil, and it was only 3.4 volts with the key on. Isn't this supposed to be around 9 volts with the resistor wire? Maybe something has, or is, shorting in the harness ???

Man, I tell you I feel like I'm pushing water uphill with a rake. The closer I feel like I'm getting, the further away it looks. I realize Rome wasn't built in a day, but wow, it's only a week till June the 6. I've been pounding on this thing pretty steady now for quite awhile.

what's the Itinerary, for the trip? I know You're heading out Thursday eve, What's up?

Pack on MON, stock up on beer.

Repack on Tues and fit a couple more things on the trailer, restock up on beer.

Unpack everything on WED because he thought he forgot something. Repack it all and load up the chevelle with beer.

Won't be able to sleep WED night so get up, recheck the trailer, unpack the tool box because he just HAS to get the tune right. Puts the third cooler of beer in the tow rig. Janet calls the police for the third time that week. Police drink up a cooler of beer.

Packs up THURS morning, unloads the chevelle, does a loooooooooong burnout in Janet's driveway at 6 in the morning, loads the car on the trailer, replaces the beer the police drank, heads for Bremerton.

Just short of the border, thinks about who he's going to hang out with. Gets more beer.

Cross the border and arrive at Bremerton. Unload and pass tech, Stage, leave on the third yellow and make a smokin pass. Continue until the track closes.

Get back to the pits, discover that Berg and the boys have consumed all the beer. Break out secret stash and celebrate.

How's that for an itinerary???

Yep, it really is 3:15 in the morning. I've never been so driven to finish something in my life. Just winding down after spending the last 3 1/2 hours doing all the last minute stuff. Had to run my friend's circle track car up to the track for him, as he races Saturday nite, and was still good enough to let me have the trailer for my trip south. What a good buddy. However, the trip was a 4 hour rounder, and we didn't get home til 11:30.

I couldn't just let the remaining things on my list sit til tomorrow. So now I'm just winding down. Fabricated a really cool mount for my master power switch in the trunk with external shutoff with a push/pull mechanism. Installed the hood pins...the make the front end super snug now. Not worried about that thing orbiting at about 100 mph. Greg, I cut out your package tray for you. It was a little short, as my material was only 53" wide, but I'm sure we can make it fit to pass.

Sacked out at 130 and sitting at work right now I can't wait to get out of here and head for SUNNY Bremerton. :beers:

Like what the heck, didn't she see my list ? Nowhere on there does it mention chandelier.

However, Darryl take note....I just got back from the beer store and have a supply of Kokanee on board. :beers:

Don't know how much will be remaining by the time we get to Hoss's though. Although, it should get us through the night at Bremerton.

The good wife helped me load the car on the trailer last night, packed my camping gear, tools, clothes....looks like I'm a homeless guy for a couple days.
