I've seen two cars with the small blowers. Both were big blocks. I think one was a 70 and the other was 72. The owner of the 72 said his was actually a 174 blower. The 177 would not fit under his stock cowl hood, but was not sbc. Maybe some one who already has that set up can respond. David.

Are the mini-roots priced cheaper than a decent centrif blower?
The right centrif blower will fit under your hood, but if its a huge price difference..
Also the different types of blowers work better with different CR's.
After my kinda-friend did a turbo on his 331 (stroked 5.0 stang), I'd be sold on a centrif for price, turbo for go..

A local guy around here has a miniblower on a 350, all under a stock 69 SS hood. I don't know if it's a 144 or 177 series.

He did have to trim a bit of the hood support structure for air cleaner clearance right near the nut in the center, and he's running a holley TBI throttle body injection setup, as a carb was too tall and hit the hood even without the drop-base air cleaner.

Here is a picture of his setup, sorry for the poor quality of the shoot but it was about 11pm and the flash on my itty bitty Canon digital isn't'very powerful.

With the extra little bit of clearance a cowl hood gives you, you will probably be OK even with a carb.

The other option is a centrifugal (as I run); no hood clearance issues at all. I was *very* happy with my centrifugal combo when it was running (and hopefully it will be back on the road fairly soon).

A 144/177 would be cheaper though. A centrifugal alone might seem pretty reasonable, but the stuff needed to go along with it will add up quick (different fuel pump, return-style boost-referenced regulator, mod the carburetor, etc.)

Pics of my centrifugal setup (ATI) can be found on the webpage in my signature.

Also, I don't know what your motor setup is now, but if you plan on running any decent amount of boost you should look into a supercharger-specific cam swap, and definately check if the bottom end of your motor is up to par. If you want to run a fairly healthy amount of boost you will likely be tearing it apart to open up the ring gaps at the very least. You will also want to have a good exhaust system, including good exhaust port flow as you will have a lot more exhaust to get rid of with a supercharger of any kind.

how much do the mini blowers cost and would you have to do about the same modifications to the engine as if you were installing the full size blowers?

Don't have the instant boost of the roots but far more efficient. They also work fine with A/C, had one on mine.

you can get mini blowers from 1500 to 2000 and no you dont have to modify for a mini they have a long water pump and a short water pump version for both small and big block.. when i had a 6-71 on my 69 camaro i had to go to manual steering box get a short water pump and cut the hood.. when i ran a mini 142 on a 383 stroker and then went to 6-71 i foun d the mini made more power at the street lvl and the 6-71 didnt come on till 4,500 on the same 383 where do you want your power to be at and what do you want to spend.. i think most would agree a 6-71 has the look. 9 psi boost is 9 psi boost 5 psi is 5 psi no matter how you slice it if you run a 6-71 make sure you have a double key way crank thats 2 key ways at 45 degree angle not just one duel key way but to.. i like the mini because you get that beware of the sleeper attack.. and if you build for it the results can be good .. think you need a lil more power try the nos air cleaner 100 to 150 shot . cooling the charge with a 100 shot feels like a 6-71 comin at you .. so its personal prefeance and what you plan to do . race/ or street play. god luck with your decision . eaither way you will have that set back in the seat torque.. torque moves a vehicle. if you take horsepower and i take torque i will winn everytime hands down.. dont get me wrong you need horse power to but emphisis on torque make it all go..
