I've been considering the Currie Currectrac rear control arms for a while now. I've been channeling my focus (read cash) to my '67 pickup, though. That project has kinda stalled, so I'm now looking at my Chevelle again. When I checked, the Currie lowers were made of tubular steel. Now, all I can find on their web site is billet aluminum. How would these stand up vs the steel version? Are they still available in tubular steel?
I don't know exactly why, but I'm a little bit leary of using aluminum in that location....
Any info is appreciated.

I don't think you need to be concerned about the aluminum arms' strength. It appears Currie is no longer selling the steel versions on their site, but you might want to call and ask if you can get them. SC&C appears to have both available on their website.
I suppose the aluminum ones would save some weight, but they sure are a whole lot more expensive and their steel ones were already more expensive then almost everybody else's steel ones. Regardless of the cost, I am exceptionally happy with the upper and lower arms I installed on my '65 project. They are exceptionally well made and very stoutly built. Oh, I installed the steel tubular lowers and adjustable uppers. The aluminum ones weren't even available when I bought mine. It's all about the Johnny Joints!

Rich,
Thanks for the info about SC&C. I didn't know that they sold the Currie's. I agree about the Johnny joints - that's why I'm going with Currie.
Are you running any kind of chassis brace, like those that Edelbrock and Hotchkis market as part of their kits (or separately, of course)?

One more thing: I have e-mailed SC&C - are they very quick to respond or should I call them if I want an answer soon?

I'm using stock style braces (reproductions actually).
I'd suggest calling SC&C, they can get backlogged on e-mail.

I called SC&C. They said that Currie stopped making the lowers in steel several months ago and shipped their last set about 6 months back.
I may still order the aluminum version, but want to see what else is available - given the steep price.
Are there any other lower arms out there that use the Johnny joint?
Any info is appreciated

Global West has lowers......http://www.globalwest.net/1964-72%20Chevelle,%20GTO,%20Olds%20442,%20A-body%20Rear%20tubular%20control%20arms%20and%20bra ces..htm
How do these rear lowers with the front johnny joint and the rear del-a-lum bushing compare to the Currie arms?
