Just wondering what can fit under the hood (non Cowl) of a '66, and I would assume '67 chevelle. BBC, standard deck, etc.

Intakes, air cleaners, etc.

Thanks

Mark, I just recently went through this drill, I can tell you for sure what will fit a stock 66 hood, now there were/are two different stock hoods, the difference is how the supported with the metal under the hood itself which also requires different insulation depending on the hood you have. Someone else may want to chime in here. However here is what I found out. I recently installed a 396 in my 66 Malibu with a stock hood, I have had the car since day one so I know it is original. I had a Edelbrock Performer RPM installed, it would not clear the hood with Edelbrock's drop base air cleaner, so I ordered a GM drop base but had to remove my electric choke from my Edelbrock 1405 carb for the base to fit properly on the carb. This manifold set up was a tight fit even with the GM drop base which sat 1" lower than the Edelbrock base, I may have had 1/4" clearance maby. Note that a Air Gap and Performer RPM are the same height, Edelbrock says these manifolds are .25" taller than the Perfromer. I decided to play it safe and go with a Performer manifold, also remember that you can have the top of your air cleaner to close to the top of the carb and effect performance of the carb depending on the type of carb also. Have you tried doing a search on this subject? I did in the Performance and Engine Forum. Hope this helps.

Was that with a 3" element?

Rpm, with holley, and an after market drop air cleaner. No problem with the fit.

Check out the engine pic below.

With my stock hood I was able to run the following configuration with good success:

- Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
- Holley heat shield
- 1/2 wood open spacer
- HP 950 carb
- 1-1/4" drop base breather
- 14x3 K&N filter

I had to orient the hood hinges such that the rear of the hood was ~.5" above the cowl height. Kind of added that old school look to the car. My dad used to race a '67 in SS/D back in 67/68. Back then it was common to raise the back of the hood just slightly to allow cool air in/hot air to escape. He said that he used short pieces of .5" conduit. I didn't need that much rise on mine to clear the breather. I will say that the above configuration is a tight fit. So much that I used a shovel head bolt to hold the breather on rather than a carb stud/wing nut.

Now I have a 2" cowl glasstek hood and height isn't an issue. In fact I'll be replacing my .5" wooden spacer with a 1" Wilson tapered spacer at the track this weekend smile.gif

HTH.

Yes everything was with a 3" element. If you are interested I can look up the GM PN# for the drop base. I believe it was used on Vettes because of there clearance problems. That's what a friend of mine at the local chevy Dealer told me. I do remember that the GM base sets 1" lower than the Edelbrock drop base.
