Were these motors similar to the chevelle and others of the time? do they have closed chamber heads on them? I bought a 68 p/u last night and the guy said it`s a 396 from a 70 caprice with 60k miles. It has the stock intake and q-jet so I`m sure it`s pretty stock. I`m thinking of swapping in a cam but I don`t know anything about the motor. It needs a few things to be running so I could`nt start it. If it has closed chambers, I was thinking about running the same cam that MR 4speed runs. I think it`s a A7 lunati. Thanks

SS pull a valve cover and get the casting # of the heads. Also is it a 4 Brl carb rochester?? probably the same as a 325HP chevelle motor!

yeah it`s a 4brl carb. I haven`t got it home yet to pull the valve cover to check the casting numbers. I just figured that there were only so many different 396 motors for 1970 and I`m guessing it`s a 325hp motor also.

You could not get a 396 in a '70 Caprice... just 350s, 400 SBCs, and 454s. '69 Caprices had a 265hp 396 available.

I won`t be able to get the numbers untill this weekend. I didn`t know they didn`t come in big cars in 1970. Thats what the guy told me it was out of but I`ll get some numbers from it Sunday when I get it home.

Boar,

There are a lot of good Impala sites. Impala Bob's like Joe mentioned, Hubbards (www.impalaparts.com), National Impala Association (www.impala.blackhills.com), Sinclair (www.impala-parts.com), Harmons (www.harmons.com), and others.

when I get the numbers I`ll make a new post since this one has turned into a website search for impala parts.

Not sure I agree with that...My dad bought a 71 Impala new, it's the car I learned to drive in, and I drove it for several years as a hand-me-down. The fender emblems said "400" but it was a 402 big block. The air cleaner decal said "400 TurboJet, 300 Horsepower." The 70 engine was probably 325hp due to higher compression. I think if you find something like a Chilton's manual, it will confirm that 454's were available in Impala/Caprice from 1970-76.

I know this has come up before, some are of the impression that 75-76 Caprices were unavailable with big blocks, but that's not true either. My dad was also the original owner of a 76 Caprice with 454. He bought both cars with big blocks (the 71 with 402, and the 76 with 454) to pull a large RV camper...and they both pulled it quite nicely smile.gif I broke a rocker arm on the 402 horsing around with it one day as a 16-yr-old, and I had to fix it before he got home from work, which is basically where my career tinkering with cars began. Trust me...it was a big block.
