I've been searching the internet for 15 minutes on this and can't find an answer.

How many quart of oil for a stock Chevy Gen IV 454 with a stock oil pan? Include the crankcase capacity and oil filter capacity please.

I'm thinking it's 6 quarts.

thanks

Depends on the pan. Some were 5, 6, or 7.

It's a block and pan from a 1979 Chevy Truck.

I think 5 then, and whatever your filter holds.

Put 5 in there, see where you're at on the dipstick, and go from there.

well - I got an aftermarket dipstick which "should" be marked and calibrated to read correctly for chevy V8 but you never know. right now I just did an oil/filter change and I put 6 quarts of Valvoline VR-1 SAE-50 Racing Oil in there and she is about 1/2 quart below the "full" line on the dipstick. I think I'll have to put some more in but I will check to make sure my dipstick tube is fully inserted into the oil pan if you know what I mean.

The "real" truck pan holds 7-8 quarts.

If I took a picture of the oil pan would any of you guys be able to tell how many quarts it is just by looking at it?

St Cingle grade 0wt oil in chilly Chicago, that 50wt single grade oil is way to think IMHO to run in the cool weahter of Chicago this time of yr.

Use valvoline NSL 20w-50 racing oil or chevron delo le 15w-40 both oils with decent zddp lvl for flat tappet cams if your running one that will pumpup into the motor much easiere then single grade 50wt when the motor is cold.

you really need to know what oil pan you have, my 1973 454 out of a 3/4 ton pick-up was 5 qt's w/ filter

if I took a picture of the oil pan can you or someone identify how many quarts it is?

Scott I know 50 weight is thick, but I only drive the car in the summer. It's a weekend warrior not a daily driver. I'll keep an eye on things and pay attention to it. Once the oil warms up it should be fine. I only put about 500 miles a year on that thing just burnin up the streets around town on weekends and such. I don't drive it during the winter - unless we get one of those freak 55 deg days in Jan/Feb which sometimes happens.

I need to see what other guys say about this. Now I'm concerned. I'll make a new post.
