: Posi feels like a locker

About 6 months ago I rebuilt the posi in my 9" Furd and whenever I make a really sharp right turn, like pulling out of a driveway it doesnt desingage and the car shakes and hops. It doesnt do it when I'm cruising down the road though. Is this normal or did I do something wrong?

I know nothing about Furds,do they have clutches and need the additive like GM or Eaton?

I know nothing about Furds either but I do I use a Ford 9" in my Chuvy and it will chatter until the clutches get broken in. The clutches are clamped in the carrier by the ring gear bolts, and if you have too much stack height it will be very tight. One thing I do is to make several tight circles in each direction to work the lube into the clutches.

You WILL need to use an limited slip additive. even if the gear oil that says " positive differential" it does not have the extra additive. I have used the generic type from Auto Zone , Advance auto etc BUT the REAL stuff from Ford works best.

i had that same problem with an s3 eaton from gm with steel clutches after trying everything known to man i chucked the 12 bolt in favor of a fab nine so im no help here . he he whats a furd? just kidding. in fact i can help in my situation i bought an old 12 bolt housing and it turned out my right axle tube was bent and the clutches always had stress on them. did you add clutches to the pack ? or did you use the same number you had . adding clutches can also have this affect. also did you assemble with possi lube./ gm dealers carry a grteat possi lube its like 8 bucks for one bottle. great stuff in fact its so great if you use 2 bottles you wont have a possi at all . lesson learned on my part. if you intsalled new springs in your rearend with the clutch pack try doing some tight figure 8,s in a parking lot and see if that loosen,s it up ..

Some don't use posi lube at all just to make it work better at the track graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I used some Valvoline gear lube, and I used a gear additive called "Equa-torque" or something from NAPA. I used the same number of clutches that is had when I took it apart. Who knows if it's been taken apart in the past or if the clutches I put in were thicker than the originals. I'll go try some figure 8's and if that doesn't work I'll try some of that GM lube. Is this a good excuse to go do doughnuts in a parking lot!? I can just see it now, as the cop pull's me over in the smokey parking lot I'll just tell him the guys @ Team Chevelle told me to tongue.gif

Like PDQ asked, are you sure its not a Detroit Locker? I've heard that F*rds came with Detroit Lockers stock......but I don't know much about F*rds.

I'm sure it's not a locker. Just a 4 spider limited slip.

Who said anything about doughnuts? The object is to rotate the clutches by forcing a difference of speed between the rear wheels.

I know I just can't imagine me driving in figure 8's in an empty parking lot without spinning the tires at least a little bit hehe. graemlins/clonk.gif

Go to the ford dealer and get the 4 ounce bottle of friction modifier, make sure to let them know if you are running synthetic of regular gear oil. There is a difference. This stuff works great and cost about six dollars. Don't get in a situation where one tire gets alot of traction and the other side just spins, like in rocks or off the road. Your new clutches will be well worn out if that happens. Mark

If you drove it much on the street the clutches might start coming apart in chunks,,the posi lube helps them slip a little during corners.

I've got two traction lock carriers to rebuild in the near future for my Kid's car. From what I've heard they aren't as good as the Eaton style that GM used. The Furd traction lock carriers have a clutchpack on only one side. I bet your clutch discs will work in with time but it sure must be hard on the spider gears and cross shaft with it binding and popping like it is now. 35 spline axles and a full spool sound better and better.

once again dont these units have springs to adjust tension lighter spring=less tension
heavy spring=more tension..

Yeah, they do have springs, the Ford design uses some very small diameter springs compared to the Eaton type. I don't know if anyone offers a selection for these but a person may be able to find a suitable replacement it the pressure is known. Good idea.

Thanks for the tips on the spring selection. I'll try that last because it requires the most work. You'd think rebuilding a stock Furd posi with stock type components would'nt require changing the spring pressure, but who knows.
