: 70 LS6 POP & Dual Snorkel
Shevelle Apr 19th, 08, 10:49 AM I visited the chevellestuff.com website and was able to decode most of the POP but there are a few numbers I couldn't find. Can someone help me figure out what they represent? They are the numbers in red:

Also, does anyone know if the option for the dual snorkel air cleaner was listed on the window sticker? Our window sticker has a small piece torn out of the middle...it says "dual" then the piece is missing. Dual exhaust is listed and readable so that's not what it is. What else could it be? Thanks!

Also, does anyone know if the option for the dual snorkel air cleaner was listed on the window sticker? Our window sticker has a small piece torn out of the middle...it says "dual" then the piece is missing. Dual exhaust is listed and readable so that's not what it is. What else could it be? Thanks! One thing I've found about POPs is not all plants supplied the data the same way.
1. The '1' after the rear end is probably for day shift (2 would be night shift) - normally stamped on the rear end housing itself, first time I've seen it on a POP. Arlington tended to do this, but not always. Most Arlington POPs I have either have '1' or '2' but one I have doesn't. Another anomaly, some used a two letter suffix code on big blocks such as CTX, some used a two letter code such as TX.
2. The '5' is the build month, May in this case. On the POP decoding page, the third item on line 2 is the build month code link.
3. Again, something normally associated with Arlington is putting the broadcast code (WO in this case) for the M22 and they didn't do it all the time.
4. The '133' are found on the POP decoding page as the second item under line 3. Assuming the '133' begins directly under the "W" of the rear end code on the line above it, the '1' indicates the "H" position for power brakes, the first '3' indicates a radio was installed and the second '3' indicates disc brakes. The option indicators are location specific and since the first two postions can be '1' or blank, I assume the first position is blank (nothing under the "R" of the rear end code) as a '1' here would indicate power steering with I'd guess it doesn't have? Positions are "G" through "M" and most would have '1' or '3' exclusively. Only the "K" position (5th position) could have either 1 or 3 depending on the air conditioner installed.
I don't think the dual snorkle air cleaner was an option that would have bene listed on the window sticker. AFAIK, specific air cleaners weren't an option in the sense you could say to the dealer, 'gimme the dual snorkle air cleaner too'. I've only seen a couple of dual snorkle air cleaners. Both happen to be on non-ZL2 optioned LS5's, one February (Baltimore) and one March (plant unknown). There are several threads on them here but I didn't see one off hand that discussed why some cars got them and some didn't. Seems they're pretty expensive to buy ($3000-$6000 range was mentioned on one thread).
Dave Birdwell Apr 19th, 08, 10:52 PM Can you post a picture of the window sticker, or email it to me? I might be able to tell you by what's there around it.
mmurphy77 Apr 19th, 08, 11:38 PM The dual snorkle closed element air cleaner only came on non-functional cowl induction, non-A/C equipped LS5/6 engines. If it had A/C and the non-functional cowl induction (LS5 only) then it came with a single snorkel closed element with the snorkle off to the passenger side (A/C compression was on the driver's side).
Shevelle Apr 20th, 08, 11:47 AM Thank you, Dale. That was just what we needed. The first "1" does begin directly under the "W" so I take that to mean Power Brakes, Radio, and Disk Brakes.
The car is a non-cowl, non-AC car. The original dual snorkel air cleaner is still there but both of the "trumpets" have been broken off and are long gone. We were able to find a replacement that needs a little work for $3200.
Dave, I don't have the window sticker in front of me right now, but I should be able to get a copy of it next week and I will send you a photo. There is something else listed on the sticker that says "domed something-or-other" that we can't figure out either.
Thanks for the help!!!
Dave Birdwell Apr 20th, 08, 5:35 PM Send it to me and I can help you out.
ls6ragtop Apr 20th, 08, 6:34 PM As has been mentioned, the window sticker won't tell you if the car had a dual snorkel style air cleaner or an open element with a non-functional hood equipped LS6. I don't think I've ever seen an LS5 car with a dual snorkel breather in 70. Only applications I know about are LS6 Chevelle without functional cowl induction, and some 70 L78 Novas and the L78 70 Camaro.
If you have a buildsheet, that will be the only way to prove whether or not your LS6 came with one. Box #55 will have either a CO code for the dual snorkel or SS for the open element breather.
Window stickers will call out for a special domed hood, and dual exhaust, etc.
Hope this helps,
Chris
Shevelle Apr 20th, 08, 6:55 PM Yes, Chris, it does help! I'll bet what we are seeing on the window sticker as the "domed something" is the hood. Dual exhaust is listed, but there is also something else "dual" and the only thing we could think of would be the dual snorkel, but if that's not normally listed on the window sticker then it's something else. I'll get a copy of the window sticker tomorrow and see if you guys can figure out what this second "dual" is. Thanks!!
elcamino Apr 20th, 08, 7:09 PM My 70 LS5 had a open element air cleaner as did all non-CI SS 396 and 454 engines. THE CI air cleaners has only 1 snorkel on pass side of engine. I got picture of all the engines.
elcamino Apr 20th, 08, 7:20 PM I got a window sticker here.
Listed on right hand side in the middle are these with the word DUAL
DUAL SPEED ELECTRIC WINDSHIELD WIPERS
DUAL MASTER CYLINDER BRAKE SYSTEM WITH WARNING LIGHT
Shevelle Apr 21st, 08, 4:17 PM Here is a copy of the window sticker... It's a little hard to see the missing section from a copy, but what we are trying to figure out is in the first line of the bottom section where it says "DUA" right after V8 ENGINE... The second line we have figured out is "SPECIAL DOMED HOOD".
wannarun70 Apr 22nd, 08, 1:07 PM I know there is not much room there , but dual chrome exhaust tips were part of the SS package.Maybe they just typed dual twice.(just a thought)
Rick_Nelson Apr 22nd, 08, 5:31 PM Dual is typed twice, i.e. (DUAL DUAL EXHAUST SYSTEM). I have seen it on several window stickers. Just a miss print.
