Here's the route I took to put a 3rd brake light on my 70.
I bought a LED Bazer 3rd brake lite as shown here. I was going to mount it upside down at the top of the rear window inside the car. There was not really a good way to do this and I did not want it to light up the whole back glass because it did not fit the window tight.

Sooo...I took it apart as all that I wanted was the LED strip. I machined a housing out of aluminum as shown here. BTW the rear window angle was around 15 degrees.

Here is the housing painted with the LED strip behind it.

Here is the completed assembly. I put double sided tape around the perimeter of the housing.

Here is the light installed and on, Sorry for the crappy pics, Don't know what happened. My back window has dark tint and you can not see the light unless it is on.

Thought you guys might like to see another option. BTW, It only hangs down into the rear viewing line by about 1/2" when looking in the rear view mirror.

Very nice...

I installed one out of a 01' Volvo S40. Window angle is about the same, just had to space it down a bit, I have all the interior ripped out of mine so i'll be doing a custom headliner around it but fits perfect. This is as close to OEM (if it were offered back in the day) that anyone can get.

Why would you want to do that? I have disliked the third taillight since its Inception.

I have gotten rear ended before & anything I can do to avoid that again (especially on my Chevelle) I will do it.

WOW al/carlos looks great! i know what ill be doing soon! where did you get the light Al?

Junkyard Blazer - $10.00 - Suburban, Astro, Jimmy all used these & they are quite common.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Cool, I like it, and I guarantee no one else has one like it! Is that chatter or step over? Manual or master cam etc? One or double vised, 2 flute b.e.m.? I once made a Ferrari style open gate shifter for an import I once owned, imagination and creativity go a long way even in a disciplined field such as machining, keep up the good work!!!

Is that chatter or step over?

It looks like both to me. Well, actually it's niether. He milled in a "defuser" for the light on purpose!:D:thumbsup:

I did it because I didn't want some jackhole rearending me and then trying to blame my 40 year old lights. I also did it because I thought it would be cool.

Personally I wouldn't put it on my Chevelle, but I totally understand why you put it on there, and it looks first class :)

Nice job, I need to add a third light to my El Camino. I've had several close calls. How was it to do the wiring?http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/rear1.jpg

Ran a ground and a single wire to the brake switch.

Years ago on a whim I bought from Autozone their Cruiz'n LED grill lights CZ-153R ($30), which was a set of two red LED strips. Very much like Alwhite00's modifications, I removed the LED housings and diffusers and mounted the two bare circuit board strips end-to-end to make one long LED light strip in a thin aluminum housing with no diffuser. The housing hangs just below the headliner, attached to two metal strips that are riveted to the metal bracket that holds up the headliner where it meets the rear window. Sorry I didn't take pictures of the custom housing.

For the wiring, I tapped into the white wire coming off the brake light switch above the brake pedal, and ran a new wire under the carpet back into the trunk, where it runs along the driver's side of the back window up into the headliner.

Alwhite00, I like the clean look of your light and the housing!

FWIW... you can do this WITHOUT tapping into the brake switch or running another wire.

Connect the left turn/stop to #85 on a Bosch-style relay.
Connect #86 to ground.

This will make the relay turn on when the left turn/stop bulb is on.

Connect the right turn/stop to #30.
Connect the stop output to #87.

The relay setup like this works as an AND function, both left AND right must be on to get power output from the relay. It also means that your third light will flash with hazzard flashers.

Note that you can run this circuit off of a 4-pin trailer connecter too if you have one of those wired in at the back.
