: Bad Gas?
cincyred5 Apr 17th, 08, 9:57 PM So I'm cruzin my 69SS and as usual, the ol' gas gauge was gettin below E, so I pull into a Mobil Station and decide...You know? I'm gonna try some high octane and see what happens...sigh. After a few minutes, I punch it at a stop light and get nothing but pops and bog down. Could it be that water was in the fuel? Just wondering if anyone has encountered premium fuel issues.
bizkit21 Apr 18th, 08, 12:17 AM the premium probably sits in their tanks longer than anything else but it shouldn't make a diff, i have heard of bad gas (water in the gas?) around here too. just got my malibu back on the road after sitting for 7 months with some premium still in the tank, put 30 bucks in to get some fresh stuff in but it's still not running right. maybe have to flush the tank and clean the carb out. never had a problem like this, like to hear what everyone else has to say
HerrKooled Apr 18th, 08, 12:43 AM put a bottle of HEET in, i do anyways with every tank along with 4 gallons of 100LL just to make sure there isn't any funny business.
SWHEATON Apr 18th, 08, 11:43 AM BAD GAS!!!!!!! BOY MY WIFE GETS PLENTY OF THAT FROM ME AFTER ITALLIAN FOOD OR DAIRY PRODUCTS(LOL!!!!!!!)
Now back to the subjetc at hand, bad fuel may or may not be his problem but in general they say todays fuel doesnt last as long before it goes sour. I have read & was told todays fuel can start to turn bad in as little as 3-4 months but on avg starts to go bad in 5-6 months. I can say this that i do a lot of side work on cars and small engine repair and the amount of motors with gumed up fuel systems has gove up at least 2x over the past 6-8 yrs so ithink there is something to the statement todays fuels soure faster thren they did yrs back. It likely has to do with ethenol & other additives todays fuel has that it didnt have in it yrs back.
I always use fuel stabilized i all the fuel that goes in my chevelle/bike/and mowers, never ever had any issues with respect to a sour/bad fuel gumming up a carb/fuel system .
BTW,a friend of mine just spent approx $2500-3k to get his new suv fixed after getting 20 gals of bad fuel from a local station by him,the fuel supplier that supplide the gas station covered it fully inc a rental car without too much hastle,i was very surprised at that.

pdq67 Apr 18th, 08, 6:32 PM And here, it's NOT SO HIGH 92 or so octane gasohol so add some Seafoam to it, then fill it up w/ fresh gas and add a small bottle of good old MMO and drive it out!

Gary S Apr 18th, 08, 6:41 PM Did that gas by any chance have some ethanol in it? Ethanol likes to separate from gasoline sometimes and can cause the same kind of problems as small amounts of water in the fuel.
If you have water in the gas, adding Heat will help. If you have ethanol in the gas, adding Heat will just make it worse because you are adding more alcohol where you already probably have too much.
langss Apr 18th, 08, 8:02 PM Not that this has anything to do with "Fuel Quality" LOL,but my daily driver is a 92 Camaro RS. I have been using Chevron 87 and nothing else. With the distance I drive daily I buy gas every other day,and the car usually sits on weekends. So Saturday morning I have to go to the bank for cash and I take the Camaro, on the way back I stop at a "Mobile" station and fill it up thinking great I wont have to stop for gas on the way to work Monday.I get home and shut it off,go in the house and do some laundry. An hour or so later I decide I should have picked up something to eat before I came home.Car starts up fine.I get to the Carl's Jr and buy some Burgers,go out to leave and the car just cranks and acts like its flooded.I floor the pedal and it finally starts but not before the Battery starts telling me "Keep this up and your walking home".It smelled like it was flooded and black smoke poured out the back.It has never done this before. It did the same thing the next day.Needless to say I never went back to the "Mobile" station and its never done it again. So was this a Fuel Quality Issue ???? or did I just get a load of crap gas.

this is why it is best to get 92 non-oxygenated when you can, i do not believe ethanol is added to this gasoline.
