I've got an almost new Performer RPM from my previous 454 build but was thinking of upgrading to an Air Gap for my new 496. Cold weather drivablity isn't an issue. Any opinions on whether it's worth the extra cash? Thanks.

My opinion is if you have it, run it, and use an oil splash guard in the lifter valley to keep it a bit cooler. If you're after every last hundredth of a second in the quarter then spend the cash on a new Airgap. I doubt its worth it tho.

I'd just buy the GM splash shield, and block off the exhaust crossovers and keep your RPM (Air Gap doesn't have them, but the regular RPM does)

Since you already have the standard RPM intake, I would use it and spend the money saved elsewhere.
From what I understand there is no performance gain in running the AirGap over the standard RPM.

Plus, with the regular RPM I can fit a mondo-size 5" element (overkill, but looks neat) on a 70ss non-functional stock cowl hood. I haven't actually bolted an air gap up to see the difference, but the one I saw in the shop looks a quite a bit taller.
I also have the GM splash shield under there.

Brit...No difference between the two when running the oil splash shield as others have said.
