: Best street/strip BBC hyd roller cam?
SILVERSS454 Feb 24th, 05, 6:55 PM I need a few hyd roller cam suggestions for a buddies' 454. He wants a cam thats "set it and forget it"...nothing custom.
He has a budget(don't we all) and would prefer a "off the shelf" type grind. This car will be street/strip(mostly street) car and will probably only be at the track, at the most, twice per month during the summer. He also says he would like a nice "lumpy" exhaust note for our trips to local cruise-in's and car shows. His performance goals are low 12's(11.90's if possible...he wants to beat me!).
Here is is combo....
'72 Chevelle all steel, 4:10 gears w/posi in 12 bolt, TH350 automatic trans, Gen IV block standard bore, choice of single or dual plane intakes, Holley 950 HP or Holley 800, approx. 10:1 compression under #049 heads.
I suggested the Crane ProMax 234/242 .612/.630 cam but, want to be sure we aren't passing on something better...maybe a Lunati?
All suggestions appreciated!!!
BigRed-L72 Feb 24th, 05, 9:20 PM Dual plane, 950 Holley if it`s up for grabs.
I like my Ultradyne hyd roller: 233 @.050 .625. 109 sep
That setup is very close to mine.
The right converter will make a big difference too. I use a PTC 9.5" 3200 give or take
MadMarv Feb 24th, 05, 10:00 PM That UD hyd roller (same one big red uses) is alot of fun. I had one in here before before I started switching things around and/or breaking stuff. Other than that cam motion has some fun hyd roller grinds they will rec if you give them your specs, I was going to go with one of them (harold was closed shop at the moment) but I ended up with a solid roller I am not so crazy about.
Most certainly going back to a hyd roller if I rebuild this engine again in a couple years or build another one.
I don't think you could go wrong with a UD/lunati or maybe cam motion hyd roller in the 233-245 @ .050, bigger if you get more aggressive, smaller if you really want set it and forget it- and a mild ramped hyd roller is the way to go for that.
I also had a comp hyd roller in the motor for a while, more aggressive than the UD/lunati grind but to no benefit at the track. No cam I've used has been able to get the unique exhaust note the UD/lunati 233 @ .050 grind back. Also if you are serious about a long lasting roller, you may want to look into a billet core one, my comp had some nasty tracking in it pretty quickly..
I should pay more attention to what I am doing..
1hot67 Feb 24th, 05, 10:01 PM I like the Comp XR294HR, although with it will require a nice converter.
SILVERSS454 Feb 25th, 05, 12:14 AM Big Red or Marv...do either of you have a part number for that hyd roller that you got from UD?
Or hopefully Harold reads this and tells us how to get ahold of a cam close to what you describe?
MadMarv Feb 25th, 05, 9:40 AM It was the UD HR4 I think. Last time it was brought up Harold I think said it was getting a little update with some new cam technology.
IIRC, and this is off the top of my head, but 296/296 233/233 .625/.625, lift might be .621/.621 I forget exactly.
I'm pretty sure my old cam has HR4 scribbled into it on the back.
good luck.
matt
BigRed-L72 Feb 25th, 05, 10:05 AM HR4 is correct. .625 lift. MadMarv is right about some changes being made, according to what UDHarold said on an earlier post.
Whittaker Feb 25th, 05, 9:58 PM What kind convertor will one of these need? 3500?
MadMarv Feb 26th, 05, 4:59 PM 3000-3500, 3500 may be a bit aggressive. Hopefully big red will chime in because he has had quite a bit of success with this camshaft. That being said, I ran about 113mph with this cam in the 1/4 @ 4000lbs with a stock converter (it would stall the engine at lights... graemlins/clonk.gif ). I never ran that cam with slicks or DOT slicks so the ET isn't as meaninful.
If anyone gets the cam, I'd be sure to know what the car weighs then ask Harold or the lunati rep and then talk to the converter company. I'd be interested to know what big red runs as a converter now that we are on the subject of this cam again.
