: Bench seat motor kaput

The electric motor (or maybe the switch) in my 70 Chevelle for the front bench seat is kaput. I don't typically move the seat, so I would just like to get it into the full back position. Is there a way to do this without the motor working? I presume there is a worm gear or something similar that moves the seat?

I took a look in the Fisher Body Service Manual and it didn't look encouraging.

The left and right hand tracks are adjusted by means of cables (like speedometer cables). All of the service procedures call for removing the entire seat assembly. Once out, you might be able to disconnect the drive cables from the motor end and manually operate them with a variable speed drill.

It might be something as simple as a bad ground to the motor which is located under the track mechanism on the driver's side about in the middle from front to back. Were it me, I'd pull some electrical checks first. The switch is readily accessible and easy to get out. I would suspect the switch or a harness connector before the motor. Have you checked for a blown fuse?

Hopefully, someone with some firsthand experience will chime in. If you do decide to pull the seat, it might not be a bad idea to get your hands on the Fisher Manual. The instructions suck, but at least the drawings show you how everything is put together.

Let us know how you make out.

Thanks Rich, you've given me some direction. I will let you know how it turns out.

You can test the switch by taking a jump box and hooking some leads to it and then use the plug from the motor and see if you can get it to work...observe all the mechanisms...if they work when you put the juice to them from the jump box then your switch is screwed up...you know in my experience it is usually a switch that doesn't work more often than a motor that is burned up..if it is the motor take it to some good alternator/starter boys and they can probably fix it...
