I picked up an Edelbrock 1405 carb and an intake manifold. I am converting my 307 from the 2bbl to the 4bbl. Any advise on doing this. Tricks to make it easier. The instructions for the manifold seem really involved and I thought it was easier than the instructions make it out to be. I haven't even looked at the carb instructions yet. I thought you just unbolt the one and bolt in the other. Hmmm, we'll see.

Be sure to mark the position of the distributor and the position of the rotor in the distributor befor eremoving it. Doing so will allow you to drop the distributor back in in the right position and with the timing very close to where it was.

Mark distributor housing and rotor location as mentioned above, label spark plug wires, drain coolant, mark your vacuum lines. After that, it's basically unbolt the old, bolt in the new.

Before you start, there are some steps to take.
Make sure you have figured out where all the vacuum lines are going to end up on your new carb and intake. Get vacuum plugs for any fittings you won't be using.

Study how your fuel line will work. It is most likely that you will need to cut the factory steel line and use a piece of rubber fuel line hose and a hose clamp to connect to the new carb.

Study your carb linkage, you may need a throttle bracket to hold the fixed end of your throttle cable.

You may have open threaded holes in your new manifold that you don't have in the old one. You will need to get plugs for these. It can also be quite difficult to get the heater hose nipple out of the of the old, pick up a new one to save trouble.

You will need a different air cleaner. Make sure it will clear your fuel line.

If you are going to an electric choke, determine where you will connect the choke wire in the fuse box and have enough wire on hand to rig it up.

Get a set of manifold gaskets, a carb gasket, a thermostat gasket, some RTV sealant for the end seals (discard the rubber seals in the manifold set). Teflon tape is needed for any pipe plugs. I like non-hardening sealer for the manifold bolts. I suggest replacing your vacuum lines, thermostat, PCV and hose clamps while you are at it.

Post back any questions.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated from everyone. I have the air cleaner for a 4bbl so thats set. The old carb was taken apart by my mechanic to be rebuilt but after his price quote I decided to just upgrade. So the original carb isn't on there. I have a good idea of one vacuum line but not sure of any others. I didn't know you could cut the fuel line and use rubber. Is there a special way of doing that or just clamp the ends real good. I didn't do an electric choke, is that ok? I didn't think I could.

Try to describe the size of the vac lines and where they come from.

Don't cut the tubing with a saw, you'll get metal particles into your fuel line. Use an small tubing cutter. I like to but a little swell on the end of the line with the ferrule for starting a double flare, but you probably don't have the tool for it. You can get away with a pair of hose clamps.

You'll be fine with out the electric choke. Assume you will use manual? You'll need a choke cable and have to learn the correct way to use it. You can always add a choke later, Eddy makes a kit to do it.

I'll have to keep an eye on this thread, I've had my 4bbl and edelbrock intake sitting in my living room since christmas!!!

I trick I do is once you pull your original intake off, squirt shaving cream down the intake ports and in the lifter valley. Now start pulling and scraping the old gaskets off. Any crud will fall on top off the shaving cream and then you simply vacum it all up with your shop vacum. Toss the rubber end gaskets and use a thick bead of silicone instead. get all your bolts started before tightening any off them and start in the middle and work out from there. The electric chokes are nice to have...even in Florida. If you don't want to add a choke, expect to have to hang out in the car babying the gas pedal till it warms up for several minutes.
