: H PIPE X PIPE ?
Robert G Oct 28th, 03, 5:39 PM I see that alot of people are running x pipes
or H pipes , are they worth the money?
witch one is better? do they add HP AND TORQUE,and if so can you feel it, or is it like a
k&n air fillter you need a dyno to see what it adds
thanks tongue.gif
supersport396_2000 Oct 28th, 03, 7:14 PM X is better but try a search too,top right.
sheetmetal Oct 28th, 03, 7:57 PM the x pipe is worth the effort if just for the noise reduction.
MAXX2 Oct 28th, 03, 9:37 PM Ever been near the "RUMBLE" of a Winston Cup Nascar Racecar?
Follow that up with the "High Speed Whine" at 180-200 MPH and you'll be "SOLD" on an "X" Pipe Setup!!!!!
NUFF SAID!!!!!

Ccass Oct 28th, 03, 10:11 PM H pipe is good for low to mid range torque. X pipe covers low medium and High.
My 85 SS with X pipe

427L88 Oct 28th, 03, 10:17 PM Oh, I don't know, gained some low speed smoothness with an X, and it helps big tube headers at lower rpms it seems.

X-Pipe for sure. You oughta hear this 505 through them, LS1 firing order and the x make for some interesting tunes.

I installed an Xpipe about a year ago and noticed a sound reduction like every one said.
marinablue67 Oct 30th, 03, 11:58 AM how do x-pipes affect the exhaust tone at idle....? i wouldn't want to lose that tight, aggressive, punchy lope that i have now.
505Nova Oct 30th, 03, 4:08 PM how do x-pipes affect the exhaust tone at idle....? i wouldn't want to lose that tight, aggressive, punchy lope that i have now.I went from 4" exhaust with 4" bullets (no crossover) that stopped just behind the drivers seat to 3" with x pipe and 3" bullets. The 4" system was very loud and deep tone outside the car at idle. When I switched to the 3" setup the pitch went up and it quieted down a bit at idle. My neighbor said at idle it sounds like two racing harley's sitting side by side, but when I get on it he said he's never heard anything quite like it.
InsuranceGuy Oct 30th, 03, 4:27 PM I have a 3.5" Dr.Gas X-Pipe system with two Dynomax Welded
3.5" in/out mufflers on my 71 SS-502. This entire exhaust system
weighs 45lbs and at the track I run the exact same times with or
without the exhaust system on the car. My previous H-Pipe system
would cost me about one(1) tenth at the track.
Dyno wise---Probably pick up a little
Track wise---Same as open exhaust
Sound wise---A little quiter...but it sure sounds good. smile.gif

72SS454Chevelle Oct 30th, 03, 10:35 PM I did some searching and these Pontiac guys have a great price on 2.5" and 3" systems.

I believe the smooth mandrel bends are critical to the functionality. Besides, prices have come down dramatically. Summit now sells a decent $89-99 X kit, Our kit is $99-109 I guess if you got the equipment and the time it wouldn't hurt to try one but to do the preferred siamese style X it is a little tricky. It involves cutting just a slice out of the side of each of the prebent pipes and then matching them fairly precisely when welding.
smittyocat Nov 2nd, 03, 11:00 PM I test built a 2 inch version with some off the shelf pieces. I sliced a small section off the bend in each pipe on my bandsaw then slid a piece of tubing throuth the to pipes to line the up and welded it , now if I can get the same pipes in 3 inch I should be able to build one for my chevelle.
