A good friend is looking for a power steering set up, for his 67 ss396 [no a/c].
Original is not a big deal. He just want something that will work and fit right.

Well, I believe with a short water pump, you have to use the PS pump with the remote reservoir , but with long water pump, you can use the all in one PS pump. (If I'm wrong, someone please let me know) I'm kind of in the same boat. Looking for a PS setup for my 67.
Might want to post in the free classifieds

64 - 67 does work best with a short pump. Those are difficult to find too. If you go the long water pump route, you need to change every belt driven accessory too. Then you need to compensate for the clearance of the fan to radiator by using a non-thermo fan blade - probably a solid hub one, because the thermo fan setup is too long. A 92 to 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee steering gear is great to swap in and a long PS pump is easy to locate (there are several threads here on it). I used a PS setup from an 80's GM BBC van with the remote reservoir on the 65 Elky. These are not too hard to find or too many $ either.

Nicely done Ted. Creative solution. What did you do for the stock style alternator bracket?
The issue with SWP is specifically interference between the PS pump, PS gearbox, and alternator. Either the units themselves or the belts to drive them.
The factory solution entailed a very long and special PS pump bracket that move the pump well out and up. Then they also used a small PS pump can with remote filler reservoir mounted over on the fender. This was only sorta a remote reservoir setup as the fluid flowed back into the small can around the pump. Note that some later Chevy vans did in fact have a similar pump/reservoir setup that you could probably interchange. I have one of these sitting in the closet at home that someday I will throw on Ebay along with all my other "spare" parts.
Some folks have gone to variations of true remote reservoir systems using mostly the newer smaller GM Type-II pump. I used a Saginaw N pump from an '85 Cadillac Deville on mine. This eliminates the interference issue with PS pump tank and alternator and allows the PS pump to be mounted high enough to avoid the PS gear. In some cases you may still need a idler pulley to keep the alternator belt out of the PS pump though.
It would be worth checking out Alan Grove Components for brackets. They have the widest selection of brackets for different configurations I have seen ANYWHERE! They have a PS alternator bracket for SWP setups for example if you want to go Ted's direction. I converted one of their mid-mount PS pump mounts for LWP to my SWP setup by swapping a couple of bolts and eliminating a couple of shims from behind the bracket. Then I made up a tensioner plate like they use on the alternator bracket, but you could do much simpler with a standard pump setup and tie into the back of the pump.

I put a quick ratio box on my 66 from a Trans-Am. I've got the long pump. Had to switch pitman arms.

The setup from a 60s, 70s gm med duty truck(c40,50,60) with a bbc (366,427) used the same setup. there are minor differences but i believe everything will fit and look good to the casual observer. try some truck junkyards
