I just picked up a late model gm 350 1992 5.7 according to the casting numbers 2 bolt main. Set up for roller cam or flat. I am not sure what the pistons are. Does anyone know what the pistons may be

I need to complete stripping the engine and then I am going to send it to the machine shop to be cleaned

I am a newbie and I am looking to do some bolt ons. I want to do this for the experience.
I am thinking about Gm iron vortec heads( not stuck on this),Edlebrok performer rpm intake, 650 or 750 holley carb DP and and xe262( or voodo)or xe 268 cam.

q.
1. I was thinking about a roller set up xe264??? Can I do this or is it a waste with the stock pistons.
2. Can someone reccomed some good cam, head combos
3.) What do you think about the intake combo

This is a street car. I race from light to light. This engine is going into my 66 chevelle with 390's and a muncie m22

Thanks many more stupid questions to come

Your current plan is exactly what everyone would tell you to do.

if i could afford it, id put that cam in my 350, you will make some nice numbers even with stock compression with it. Someone told me to run a roller cam you need to have roller rockers, is that true, if not id rather get that cam myself.. (btw its an xr264, there is no xe264 for a chevy smile.gif )

Go with the XR if you already have the roller lifters and they are in re-usable condition.

If you have the "spider" hold down for the lifters, but your lifters are shot, you could always find a stock set at the junkyard, and you could get them for the price of th entrance fee, lol.

The point I'm trying to make is, if your block is already set up to use a roller cam, use the roller cam.

I dug a little deeper and the casting number 14093638 was a gm 5.7 camaro engine 9:3:1 compression. I have to pull the cam but I think it is a GM 1011773 .415/4.30 lift 202/207 dur 114.5 lobe

So I am looking at the xr270hr cam.

Any head recomendations

If the block will accept the factory roller cam then I would definately run a roller, use factory hydraulic roller lifters and a performance grind aftermarket cam or maybe GM's hotcam. You can run stamped steel rocker arms with a roller cam-doesn't hurt a thing.

I vote for Vortecs. If your CR really is 9.3:1 with the 64cc heads of 1993, this would bring your CR up a tad to 9.5:1.

But the important part is you probably have pistons with a slight dish in them, which would make a pretty efficient combution chamber when mated with the Vortecs. Also, the Vortecs will produce lots of torque.

Did you buy this thing without the heads? Does the person you bought it from still have the centerbolt valve covers?

I have the heads and the valve covers.

Then your best bet would be the Vortecs. You already have the centerbolt valve covers, all you need now is the intake and the heads will be ready to go. If you already need to buy an intake, then the deal is even better.
