: Seedometers
EastYorkCamino Apr 15th, 08, 7:03 PM Recently while driving my 65 El Camino the speedo went nuts and emitted a weird buzzing noise. The red needle then fell out. Returning home the centre piece that holds the needle fell out.
Ever happen to you? Can I just rebuild the old speedo or should I get a new one?

highlandlake Apr 15th, 08, 10:00 PM C'mon Mike you knew what he meant. ;)
My opinion chief, (no name in profile) is to just get a replacement speedometer from E-Bay by a seller with decent feedback and who knows it works. Spend $50 or so and be back on the road instead of searching for a rebuilder and waiting for it. Maybe get a new cable too since new ones are less than $40 with shipping on there too.
If you have a fully original car, extra super nice shape then maybe get yours rebuilt? Might be pricey though. If you have patience, lots of light and some dexterity you can remove the old one without too much trouble.

That sounds like the cable and might also be your speedometer might be bad if it was buzzing and the needle fell off?
68bye Apr 16th, 08, 11:57 AM If you don't drive faster than the mechanical limits of the speedometer all the time, this sort of thing wouldn't happen. !:D

EastYorkCamino Apr 17th, 08, 6:58 PM Thanks for the information. What cable would I order as it has a 700r4 trans.?
animal69 Apr 17th, 08, 8:16 PM I don't think a cable is going to fix it if parts are falling off!

Match up the cable you're using now unless it's to long or too short. That's usually the only difference is the lenght or how the cable attaches to the speedo head itself. Some thread and others snap.
68bye Apr 18th, 08, 12:06 PM When we went to an Auto Meter speedo in the wife's Camaro, a friend had a semi truck repair place. I showed him the speedo, and gave him the length, and he made one for us on the spot. 'Took about 4 minutes.

It is likely you will need another speedometer but you will not know until you take it out and have it checked by a professional.
I can recommend a good shop:
Speedometer Service Co 918-584-7698
1502 E 11th St
Tulsa, Ok 74120
Steve Wayne
He has repaired several speedometers and mechanical tachometers for me over the years.
He was a GM Certified Repair Center when there was such a thing so he has been doing this for a long time. He is pretty fast, does good work and has reasonable prices. He does mechanical repairs, not cosmetic restoration.
If you need it, I have an extra 65 speedometer.
