I am intalling new carpeting in a 70 with buckets and 4sp with center console. My question is this, does the retaining ring which fits over the shifter hole, go on over the carpet or under to hold down the rubber boot. I have test fit the ring and pushed it into some what postion, but it seems to really pucker the carpet out. Any help would be great. Thanks

I am doing mine now on a 69 no console car.
I have a bracket that goes under the carpet and then their is another finish cover that holds down the shifter boot that installs over the carpet with 4 screws.
