Alright so here is the story, I pulled the dash and wiring harness from my 70 el camino to put in my other el camino. It was running and everything when I pulled it and I labeled everything. I was swapping dashes cause I wanted the round gauges, so anyways, I put this dash in and wire it back up to a motor I just bought and it wont work. When I try to start the car, it just clicks once. I thought it might be the starter solenoid and that was cheap so I replaced it, but wasn't it. I figured out that the clicking is actually coming from this stupid thing on the firewall in the picture below.

So i decided to try and trace down all the wires and just try and make sense of whats going on, and just got confused haha.
So here we go,
as seen below, I got these 4 wires that run across the engine, orange for heater core, purple for starter selonoid? black??ground??where though, and yellow that i had labled to go to starter selonoid but goes no where... I'm running HEI by the way, was that wire for old school points distributor or something?

So how should I wire this stuff up, I just want the simplest way, and if that thing on the firewall is for the Temperature can I bypass it, cause the only other thing it does when I try and start it is say that its HOT,
Also here is the mess of wires that confuse me and were going to the thing on the firewall, except they all come from one wiring that goes up to the front of the bulkhead where the lights are... very confused.

Can someone help me out on what is the simplest way to just make my car run and alternator charge haha.
Thanks guys,

First off. What years are the two el Caminos? If their not identical years it isn't a direct swap. That clicking thing on the firewall in your 1st pic i believe is for T.C.S. and is not neccessary. When you turn the ignition to the start position do you have 12 volts at the purple wire? If not i would check the neutral safety switch at the bottom of the column inside under the dash. Do you have 12 volts on both sides with the car in park? If not you could need a simple switch adjustment. The connector for the switch has 2 purple wires going in it. If you swapped a different year dash harness in instead of the 70 dash harness. You may need to repin the connector. Search the database for dash swap elree colby helped with mine years ago.

I would seriously consider purchasing a factory assembly manual. It will answer a lot your questions. I own a 71 and the wiring is slightly different from yours. The orange wire is for the heater, purple is for the starter solenoid and goes to the (s) terminal on the starter, the temperature connector is the two pin connector in the 4th pic in your palm. If you look at the firewall there should be a single green wire connector at the junction block. That is for the temp wire. The yellow wire that goes to nowhere is for the coil, if you're running hei you don't need it.

Yeah I had figured from research it was the TCS, but wasnt sure if I could just cut it out completely and if there was a known easy way around it. I have already checked my nuetral safety switch and it doesnt seem to be it, I have had to deal with that before therefore it is practically new. They are both 70s, but it doesnt matter either way cause I pulled the whole dash and harness together. and yes the one in the pictures is 1970. The only thing I haven't gotten around to check is the voltage at the wires, I put a test light one just to check if it was getting power, but not to see true voltage.
I charged the battery thought and it does turn the even over easily when I jump the starter. I think that the whole circuit for the ignition is just not complete and the one from the el camino central is wrong like others have said before. does anyone just have a layout, of ignition and alternator wiring... or somebody that has a chevelle can just note where wires are going to and from haha.

Actually it does matter if you change the dash with the harness. I believe the ss engine harness is different also. So the best thing you could do is swap the engine harness too. That way the connectors will (match) up.

I'm pretty sure there aren't like any connectors, theres an ignition wire and wires to starter and alternator, other than that its all lights and stuff, its not like a new car with fuel injectors computer and all that jazz, and i dont see any reason whatsoever there would be a difference between ss, the ss option is just bigger motor and such. I really just need to figure out how to wire the alternator and start, I dont care if i have to manually cut and make all new wires, thats not a big deal, just dont know the path of the wires.
