: The dyno looms for the RSE 498

I figured I ought to call my engine a Ron's Special Engine because I picked and bought all of the parts. :)
Even though I'm sure it's been duplicated before.

Just a little humor from your old Uncle Ron.

Anyway, the short block is nearing completion. The bores are done, and the new rod bearings have arrived so my machinest can set up the clearances. Next will be the mock up to determine rod to block clearance, cam degreeing, piston to valve clearance and rocker geometry (push rod length).
The cool deal is, my engine guy will let me come into his shop and do all these things myself. From there, he will put the short block together, I'll do the rest. I like the fact that he will get to check all of his machine work during assembly. And while I have put a more than a few engines together, this allows him to catch something I might miss! Experience is worth a lot!

Because we will have missed the entire race season, I have decided to run the thing on his dyno. Which is great because not only will I get a power reading, but the engine will be broken in and ready to go once next season arrives.
Of course I'll be chomping at the bit for a few months......
BTW....he has an inertia dyno that he built himself. It's pretty cool.
With a known power level, I can predict, to a degree, how the car will run. And.....I will be able to go out and wail on it 1st pass......
Of course the plan will be to take it easy a pass or two, a plan that always falls apart after the first burnout. I'm sure you know what I mean! :)

Anyway, that's the plan, just thought I'd update you all......

In the mean time, since I'm jonesing to burn some rubber, it's out to the street legal program this Friday with my FWD 442. Hoping to hit the 14.3's, I got me some drag radials. Go ahead and laugh....at least it's a GM car.

Ron,

What are the specs of your new "RSE" engine going to be? (heads, SCR, cam, intake & carb, etc...)

Nothing wrong with a 14.3. I didn't run much faster than that with my '69/408 combo. Of course, my '69 does look nasty off the line - nothing like seeing a car go sideways out of the hole!

Racing is racing! I had a friend in college that ran a 4 door '70 Cutlass in brackets for 2 years. Stock 350 4 barrel olds motor - bone stock with auto trans. Car ran 15.8 - 15.9 - never varied. He won more money over 2 years than you could count.

Ron you say that the guy has an inertia dyno for auto engines. i was unaware that such a thing existed. I have some experience with inertia dynos from building two stroke race engines, but it would seem to me that inorder to test an engine with 300+ hp the inertia flywheel would have to be huge like weighing 2000 lbs for example to test a 50 hp two stroke you would need a inertial wheel that weights about 400 lbs. perhaps the guy uses a large drum as his inertia wheel. i would be interested in hearing anything more you know about this dyno.

I have used an inertia engine dyno before - I believe the power limit was about 2000hp. The wheel would spin for a long time after a pull.

The RSE thing is just for humor. :)
Specs are simple:
Heads are AFR 305 with the CNC chamber.
Pistons are SRP, 10:1 advertised with my heads.
Cam is a Comp Street solid roller, XR292R, roughly .650 lift and 254/260 duration on 110 lobe sep
manifold is a Merlin Rect Port
Carb a 950 HP, Hooker 2" headers

About the dyno.
I believe it uses a 700lb flywheel. Has a ring gear around it with many teeth that is sensed by the computer. The computer controlls the throttle and clutch and does the math.
Basically, it measures the time required to spin the weight from about 2500 rpm to whatever upper limit you set it to.
Trust me, it quite effectively loads even a 600+ horse engine. He has run alcohol FC engine on it inthe past, but I believe they are too powerfull now.
The clutch bTW is used to uncouple the weight from the engine after the pull.
From what I gather, it's decently accurate. And certainly good for comparrison testing. Probably not up to snuff with today's high dollar dynos though.

And yes, the flywheel spins for quite some time after a pull.
66 283.....if you are on the west coast of Canada, my guess is my guy knows your guy!

thats pretty interesting. an inertia dyno is a great way to test engines it simulates the acceleration under load of the real vehicle or conditions really well. they are the prefered method for dynoing two strokes.

Tht thing should rock! Now I need to name my engine too. Can't really say it's mine, other than the cam and slugs it's all old GM parts!

Vietnam Era spinning rat MF ( VESRMF)

Old Red's Engine ( ORE) ?????? ;)

Contra -bse ( since its an HP mill , NOT a torque mill).

Good luck Ron, it'll kick tail! No matter WTF you call it!

I think calling mine a 439 VESRMF will add another 10-15 hp at 7000 rpm!@

I like that "Vietnam Era Spinning Rat XXXXXX", I say call it a "varmit" for short.

Gene, you might just be as bad as me with the recycled parts. One of these days, I am going to march myself right upstairs to the attic, get my piggy bank out, cash in my saved lunch money and get some "new parts" - at least something that was made since 2000!

I have an 468 with little higher compression and Canfield 310cc heads and that cam.

With 1-7/8 headers i got 671hp@5900rpm.., Hope your combo will make alittle more ,)
