What times at the track are you running, and what kind of setups? I just dropped a 408 in my car and can't wait to hit the track graemlins/thumbsup.gif . I just want to hear from guys running the same motors, to see if anyone is having alot of success.

Someone has to have a 396, 402, 408 motor. Don't be shy :D .

I'm running a 408" with a Performer RPM cam and oval port stock heads. It runs in the 12.70's with 4:10 gears with 60 foots in the mid 1.70's.

What kind of times are you shooting for?

BBD's 67 with the old 396 with closed chamber 215 heads (w/stock valves).181 domed pistons (9.75 to 1 comp)and a small Crower solid went a best of a 12.45/106 MPH running 4.10's and a 4000 stall..low 1.70's 60 ft. Had an RPM intake and a BG 850..

Well Guy's today was the first time I went down the 1320. I was proud of the "Old Red Girl" but the driver ain't too sporty..

1st run
R/T ... .896
60' ... 2.253
330 ... 6.051
1/8 ... 9.086
MPH ... 81.61
1000... 11.682
1/4 ... 13.856
MPH ... 103.87

2nd run
R/T ... .871
60' ... 2.238
330 ... 5.473
1/8 ... 9.089
MPH ... 81.29
1000... 11.692
1/4 ... 13.873
MPH ... 103.45

I always thought that driving the 1/4 mile was simple. Light turns green, floor it, the motor does all the work, strong motor, great time. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!
The car pulled hard. The driver couldn't figure out how to not spin the tires all the way through 1st and 2nd. I believe the driver saw the green flag drop, pulled up his skirt, and wet the bed! As many times as I told myself "leave at 1500, roll into the throttle SLOWLY, do not break the tires loose, shift into 2nd at 5500 and then into 3rd at 5500, roll through the traps, and smile at the 11.00 time slip".
NOT!!!!!!!! Anyway,

Yup, same problem with my setup. Even with M/T ETS's, and some old slapper bars I was spinning out of the hole. Your MPH say loooow 13's, high 12's.

Not my car but a good friend of mine used to own a fully restored 1965 425hp 396 Corvette M21 and 4.10 gears. This had period correct stock type tires.Talk about no traction...He made several pass's in the mid 15's creating a bonfire in the process. In utter desperation he tried leaving in second gear....ran mid 14's....hmmmm..... So he tried leaving in 3rd gear....Ran a 13.56 useing only 3rd and 4th gears with no wheel spin..... Sort makes one belive he really didnt need 4.10's in it... At least not with those stock type tires.

Bad Rat,not to critique your combo, but here it goes:

Get an RPM intake
Cam is too big
That Saginaw won't last
Get 3.73's
And most importantly,TRACTION
You have a great motor..good heads and very good compression, but the cam/intake are way outdated..it'll run good and turn on well, but those 2 components will hold you back..

Thanks for the info. I ran this cam before and it ran great. Now I was running 12:5.1 pistons too. Why do you think the cam will hinder me? The rep. a Comp Cams said it would still work fine with this combo. The intake is because I'm concerned with hood clearance on a '67. I'm not sure how much I can get away with. I'm tring to decide which gear I want a 3:73 or a 3:90.

mr 4 speed
Mar 23rd, 04, 6:14 PM
I'm sure the guy at Comp didn't drag race with that cam ;) Its more suited to a 454 with some compression in a light car.. I understand why you would use the Torker due to hood clerance, however a few guys here have fit an RPM under the stock hood of a 67..I'd go with 3.73's and run a 26.1-27" tall tire.Again,JMHO and some experience..not meant to offend or knock your combo.

Mar 23rd, 04, 6:18 PM
He is concerned bc that is a huge flat tappet cam and you comp is less than 11-1 you said yourself you ran it 12.5-1 305 is kinda big for rest of your combo

70 chevelle - 3900lbs
408 BBC - 9.5:1
stock 290 heads
rpm/TRW LS-6 cam
1-3/4 headers/11 inch holeshot
3:31 gears
650 dp
2.0's 60' 13.80s@98mph
I think the exhaust was way to small. I had a friend port the heads (stock size valves) and put the comp xtreme 230/236 cam in the motor and it went 11.80s @113mph in a well setup 3200lb camaro

Thanks, Mike, for the kind words. The weather is starting to warm here in the Northeast. I am itching to make some runs. I do not have a rollbar. So going faster will only get me kicked out of the track. I made several runs last year very near the 11.92 on different trips. It seems like no matter how fast you go your always looking to better your best time. My last trip to the track last year I made 3 runs, all were against late model blown Fords. 1 lightning and 2 late model Cobras. The Cobras had me by 3-4 mph.
Ther nearest margin of victory was .5 seconds in my favor. Priceless.

Hey, BB_mike & chvl402. I'm curious as to what cam , intake, and compression ratio you guys are running. You two guys are where I thought I'd be speed wise in the quarter.

Dave's explanation will be better than mine, 'cause he's smarter. smile.gif

10.3ish Static Compression. DCR... yeah, my motor's dynamic alright.
cam is a 280/288 hydraulic with .525/.550 lift
Intake is a Wieand Stealth (pretty much a dual plane performer RPM)
carb is a 750 vacuum 2ndary holley.

It started life as my daily driver, so I couldn't get too crazy with it. ;) REally though, that's no excuse. I'm just a wussy. :D

I short shift 1-2 at about 5600, and ride out 2-3 to about 6k. I have a 3" diameter 10,000 RPM tach, so I have to squint my eyes to know when to shift... graemlins/hurray.gif

Ran an RPM wih no problem. Had to use a drop base air cleaner. Also used a #169 GM intake with a 1/2" spacer.
