: SBC throwing belts...
gearheads78 Oct 16th, 04, 12:19 AM I recently made some changes to my motor and it revs quicker and higher than before. Ive never had a belt problem before but now 3 out of the last 7 passes it has chunked a belt. Its not a alignment issue and its plenty tight. Is there any sure way to prevent it without going to an electric pump or drive.
Thanks
mechcanic427 Oct 16th, 04, 12:26 AM deep groove pullies or my favorite, a under drive crank pully
gearheads78 Oct 16th, 04, 12:37 AM What are the best for the money and if I go underdrive will it have an effect on charging/cooling on the street?
sschevellefan Oct 16th, 04, 12:40 AM you could go to a cog belt setup. my buddy ran one on his old sbc, never pitched a belt again. they have a whine, almost like a blower whine. i can`t remember the name of the company but I`ve seen them advertize in the back of Chevy hi performance magazine. I think they are called billet boys or something like that.
mechcanic427 Oct 16th, 04, 12:44 AM i'm using march pullies and have had no problems with a 427 bb (525 hp) in 100 degree heat, stop and go traffic but i am running a becool alum radiator and a clutch fan and a one wire alt which i have to rev the engine a little higher to get it to charge at first.

The belt would be louder than my exhaust. ;) I am also looking at the least expensive solution to solve my problem.
RussD Oct 16th, 04, 1:23 AM Seems like this is the way to go:

Get the pulleys from an 86+ smallblock, be it van, camaro whatever and put em on your stuff. Then use the 5 or 6 rib belt. As stated in that post, its not a true serpentine, but you'd be taking the pulleys from a serpentine setup at the junkyard. If I ever find the time to go to the junkyard I plan to do whats outlined above, as Im having the same problem as you chucking belts at the strip. I would guess the junkyard wouldnt charge you much more than 20-30 bucks for the pulleys and then those ribbed belts are like 20 a pop too. Fairly cheap solution.
gearheads78 Oct 16th, 04, 10:01 AM Perfect! Thats exactly what I am after.
Pat Kelley Oct 16th, 04, 12:45 PM Nice setup. Too bad it won't work with a short water pump.
sschevellefan Oct 16th, 04, 2:10 PM actually the whine wasn`t too loud at all but you could hear something. it was just a idea for you. no big deal. what is important is you find what will fit your budget and your needs. good luck.
ovelle Oct 16th, 04, 2:17 PM shorter belt

pdq67 Oct 16th, 04, 3:27 PM I run a stock GM, deep groove alternator pulley and haven't tossed a belt for a long time back when I was daily driving my car.
And when I was tossing belts, it turned out to be an alternator front bearing going bad!! (I never have seen a bad rear bushing??)...

69bigblock Oct 16th, 04, 8:46 PM Hi Richard!, used to have the same problem till I switched to a Moroso deep groove pulley. No problems since. Been racing lately? Drove out to Denton last night, ran a 7.1 and then drove home. Lotta nice cars there last night. Nostalgia Super Stock Event there on the 22nd (next firday). Good luck.

Frank Hey Frank...
I have not had my car out since the night that I invited you out. That was when my belt throwing started. I really want to go back out soon but Ive got to get this problem fixed.
Nice times by the way. Was that a motor pass? 7.1 driving to the track is impressive to say the least.
Back to the subject. Does anyone know where to get stock appearing steel deep groove pulleys for a long water pump? I can't find anything but what March and similar have to offer.
I am also interested in the 80's factory flat rib set up mentioned in the post above. Does anyone what cars and years exactly they were on. I may try to find some in a wrecking yard tomarrow.
OregonMalibu Oct 20th, 04, 3:05 PM I used to have that problem as well. Which was a problem because I lived 90 miles from the track and I was driving there. My belt was kicking off when I let off the gas after the traps. I was running stock pulleys. I put on a set of March underdriven deep v pulleys with the brackets, Haven't pitched a belt since. I also put on an electric fan at the same time. At the time it was a low 13 sec car. I took over .2 off my e.t with the fan and pulleys. The march stuff are nice parts, but the generic stuff from summit is alot cheaper. Good luck
69bigblock Oct 20th, 04, 4:04 PM Hi Richard, that was on the motor. I did switch to slicks at the track. Once you throw a belt you need to replace it because for whatever reason it throws it easier the next time and from then on. Here is a link for the Moroso pulley.

Let me know how it works.
