: Runnin a turbo

I was just lookin around on some other sites about third gens and vettes and really got interested in the turbo aspect of their cars. Seing that they are fabbing up everything, since their is not a kit for any of them, i was just wondering if anyone here is running one on their cars. Im thinking about doing this in the future and was just trying to get a feel of how they look/perform in our chevelles. I'd really like to run a twin turbo, but a big single would do good too.
I've been doing my homework on the turbos and bought the book by Hugh MacInnes and been trying to figure out what i would need as for a turbo and such, but just need some ideas as to how to fab it up in my engine compartment.
So does any one here have any pictures of twin or single turbo'd chevelles? i'm pretty good at welding and fabing stuff up, so that wouldnt be too much of a problem, just needing some ideas as to how to go about it.
Thanks alot
chris

banks has turbo kits and exhaust manifolds for easy mounting of turbos. but if you wanted to fab it all your self look at burns stainless for lots of good tubeing and stuff for your fab work. burns has great merge collectors that i would use if i were doing this project.

Well, i dont mind fabbing up a hole lot, but the manifold part of it would be nice. i've seen pictures of the banks manifolds and they look like a nice piece to have for this. ill probly end up getting them just to ease the instalation.
im just wondering how to pipe everything in, like the down pipes, intercooler and piping, ect. in know im going to have to fab up all the piping for the down pipes and the intercooler mounts and piping.
I've also seen some people using s10 swap headers flipped upside down and just putting flanges for the headers on them, seems to work realy well for them in a tight third gen camaro compartment. the main thing im going to have problem with is getting all the piping in and choosing the right turbo(s) for the engine.
I was thinking of running twins with twin intercoolers placed somewhere with electric fans pulling air through them. Dont know where to put them yet, but when the time comes i think i can figure it out. I dont want to put them in front of the radiator because of them causing a restriction through the radiator.
If i could find a picture of twins installed in a 70-72 chevelle, i could get an idea of how to go about everything and figure out what all im going to be needing.

You dont really need intercoolers on a street engine, if you were to run a pair of T3's set at around 3-5 psi, that would give you great acceleration and no need for intercoolers or piping($$$). Vince(forget last name) over at pro-touring.com has a 68 elco running a pair of T3's at about 10 psi and intercooled. His runs about 175-180 MPH. Real nice car. Go to www.pro-touring.com (http://www.pro-touring.com) and type in turbos in the search for power enhancers, about half way down the main forum page, there are hundereds of posts, all custom, no kits for this older stuff.

The nice thing about Chevelles is you got a ton of room under the hood for turbos and all the associated piping. I would definitely run an intercooler.

I've been playing with turbo cars since 1994. Glad to help if I can. Click here (http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4291664427) for some pics and info. on my last one.

There is actually a pretty simple formula to figure out how big of a cooler you need-most turbo set-ups don't need one in a low boost application. I'll look up the formula

You can also look at http://www.grapeaperacing.com all sorts of turbo info

Boyd, I installed Twin Garretts on my 67 BB, and it took about 4-6 months to do. the main thing to know is that it takes time to do it right and I do mean right! my unit is variable psi. at the moment I do not run a intercooler but a add on would be no problem. I will try to post some pictures at a later date. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

That is a pretty sweet setup at force. I know its gonna take a lot of time to get it done right, and a lot of money from me. right now im just gatherin infromation on how to do it and what all im going to need.
The main thing im having problems with is getting a turbo selected. right now im thinking about going with a garret t04e's with a 46 trim. What do you all think about those for my 406, running about 5-10lbs.
More than likely ill end up fabbing up everythink i need for the headers and such. I seen a tech post somewhere where they show you how to make a head flange and the turbo flanges for the headers using a metal hole saw and a file/die grinder. Since i have access to a plasme it will make things a lil easiear to.
Hopefully in a few years ill have the time and money to complete this. being in school still slows progress down since i work for my dad on the farm. So i basicaly work about 4-5 months.
well thanks
