Don't hire an appraiser! I've had appraisers come and look at cars that I was selling and it was a joke. Some came in way too high while some were way too low. Not their fault but each car (brand & model) has their particular market. You need to follow it closely. I'm sure we have some members in UT. There's also Mike Crown...who does authenticating of 66-67 SS Chevelles. He can work from pics. He's at www.mysterychevelle.com Good Luck!

I have to agree with mark on the appraiser .. not worth the cost IMO unless he definitely knows 66's.

and thanks for referral also ...people have to what is their best interest and the best interest of their wallet!

An appraiser is a good way to get an unbiased opinion of a car long distance. A liscensed appraiser who inspects a car for a buyer doesn't so much tell the buyer what the car is worth, he makes a detailed report on the cars condition, the value is left to the buyer. I had an appraiser look at a car I was selling, the buyer was 1,000 miles away. The car was inspected on a rack. It took around 3 hrs. and everything was documented down to engine numbers, transmission numbers, casting dates and a detailed account of condion of the car. The complete body was inspected with a magnet for filler. He was under the dash for probably 20 minutes inspecting wiring. A buyer does this for two reasons. First, it lets the buyer know the condion of the car. Second, should the car be sold, it establishes condition of the car before it was shipped to insure proper care was taken during transport.
An appraiser is only asked to state a value when insuring a car or making an insurance claim, it is not his business to tell a person how much to pay for it.
If you are planning to buy a car long distance, you will be a lot safer hiring a professional than someone recomended by a friend of a friend who gives it a half hour opinion.
Few buyers will inspect a car as well for themselves as a liscensed appraiser will. Dealers use this service all the time.
As for the price, thats your decision.

Post a question here for someone to take a look at it - if that doesn't work, then yes, hire an appraiser to look at it.

Once you hear back, that will determine whether you will want to fly out there to REALLY look at it yourself, or pass. Note I left off the option to buy it unseen..... I almost bought one unseen from Tulsa (I'm in Chicago) based on tons and tons of great pictures.

Let's just say the car looked great in pictures and from 20 feet, but every foot closer brought more of the crap out... I did not buy the car, and am very, very glad I went and saw it in person.
