My son and I have the door gapspretty good now. we're getting it ready for paint and have the windows and regulators out of the doors and
was wondering if the gaps will change when the weight of the glass is added?

I would weigh the window and anything else that goes in it, duplicate that weight, maybe you could hang that weight over the door opening, you also could stick a two x four across the window sills and weight that, but you still might want to see how much clearance you have when you open the door.

Thought you were done, huh.:)

I got it, go in the house and have your boy keep your wife sidetracked, grab the bathroom scales, and steal a bedsheet .

Then just throw some pieces of steel or whatever and tie it up in both ends of the bedsheet, hang it over the door sill.

I'l try something like that. We were working on the drivetrain this winter. finished that up tonight minus the carb. Just ordered that today. we had the front clip off putting in the engine and tranny.

They wont change, the hinges really dont have any play (unless they are shot and you didnt rebult them)

Well I just got done searching about 8 car forums on door gaps, hinge adjustment etc.

Heres some of what I found.

Just a couple of mentions of preweighting the doors.

Several on new hinges and newly rebuilt hinges having some slop in them.

One case of the door jam that actually flexes at the hinge area, not much, but noticeable.

A couple mentions of having the body mount bolts tightened down before you start.

As a test, next time two guys are next to a car, open the door, on any car I guess, and have one guy lift it up and down and the other watch the metal outside the hinge, see if it looks like it moves, or you can feel it move with your finger tips.

The bride just got out of bed, so I told her to put her shoes on, I wanna do a little test, boy did she get the ears back when I told her what I wanted to do. :) it didn't help matters that its raining out either.:)

We have found that the weight of the windows/regulaters will make a slight difference even with rebuilt/new hinges. When putting the car back together for paint we always bring the back end of the door up a touch.
