Just got my GMPP 454HO fired up last weekend and I was wondering when is the best time to change the oil? Since it has a roller cam, theres not much assembly lube to speak of in the oil right? I ran it for a good 45 min or so between Sat and Sun, and took it around the block a few times to help the rings seat. The oil still looks very clean, but thats probably not much of an indicator for metal shavings.
The last couple of engines I built ran hyd cams, and I changed the oil right after the intial cam break-in.
500 miles, change the oil, cut the filter open and inspect.

I always change my oil right after the cam break in. It might not be necessary with a roller cam but you still have all the rest of the initial wear in items. I run a roller cam also and I still change the oil right away. You want to check for brass color in filter etc.. and I don't like any extra moly plugging up my oil filter. I'm probably just paranoid.

Change it, and cut the filter not that there will be any problem, but why not, its a cheap way of sleeping at night. Roller Cams usually do not give a problem, and an oil filter change is so darn cheap anyway.
I am anal about oil changes, my stroker gets fresh oil every 750 miles. At 5,000 miles we had to pull the heads, and the cross hatch pattern looked like brand new on the bores.
My daily driver vehicle gets changed every 3,000.

Sounds good...I think I'll just go ahead and change it to be on the safe side. Thanks for the advice.
