: Gas tank return line

My fuel pump on my 72 has a return line that the previous owner plugged. I haven't had any issues with it so I just left it. Recently I pulled my gas tank and noticed that there was a return line hanging near the gas tank, but it wasn't connected. Looks like my gas tank has no fuel return inlet. So now I'm really confused. Did my car car come with that return hooked up? This must not be the original gas tank correct? Did original tanks come with a fuel return inlet? Do the repro tanks for my car come with an inlet? Thanks.

My 69's got a return line. It plumbs into the fuel pump in the engine bay, and goes to the sender/pickup on the tank. I thought it had something to do with preventing vapor lock.

Just some more information. On my one owner 70-LS-5, It has the long pump with the " Vapor Return Line " it is hooked up.
On my 70 SS 454 STA. WGN. (driver) It has the same pump. To make it look like a REAL LS-5, I took a piece of brake line and soldered the end shut, Then attached it to the fuel pump and shoved the brake line back into the frame where it DEAD ENDS.
I did this 6 years ago and NO PROBLEMS. And it looks like a REAL LS-5.

I do not think this line is that important.

At the fuel tamk, does it tap into the sender line with a "T"connection?

No, I think it has a seperate hose barb. It would require a different sender, or drill and tap your for a fitting. As stated above, it is the vapor return line. If you are having problems with vapor lock, get it hooked up. If not, it won't hurt anything to leave it plugged.

Here we go. Here's what I was looking for. The return line requires a specific sender unit like this:

My sender must not be original either. At least for now I can order a new gas tank and worry about getting a new sender if I decide to hook up a return line later on.
