: I did a bad thing.............
Rumblin70SS Nov 22nd, 04, 10:48 PM Hey all,
You might remember the pictures of the chassis work I posted a little more than a month ago that was being done on my 70 SS............
http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/Rumblin70SS/tc10.jpg
The paint work on the car was ok, but I didn't feel it was up to the same standard as the rest of the car since everything else came out so good.
Here's some pics.......check em out and any comments, including color choices are appreciated!!

Slowpoke70 Nov 22nd, 04, 10:53 PM soooo, where's the bad thing? All I see is something expensive.
Nice sheetmetal!
Rumblin70SS Nov 22nd, 04, 11:00 PM Slowpoke 70,
All my friends we're on me cause they said the car was too nice to paint. Their thought is it's a race car and something is gonna get messed up........I have to keep telling them it's a street car!!
And you're right, it is expensive, but if you're gonna do it once, you might as well do it right!!
Thanks for the compliments on the sheetmetal, but what you don't see is we cut this car in two and replaced the whole rear half of it with another car then added the repro quarters the first time it was painted!! I'm glad it's almost complete!!
Harold Sutton Nov 23rd, 04, 1:57 AM I'm dying to hear what it runs with that big motor, give us the news when you get it flying.
Rumblin70SS Nov 23rd, 04, 8:29 AM Harold,
You and I both........lol. I'm hoping for mid 9's on the motor and 8's on a sneeze of spray once I get everything ironed out. I might go turbo or supercharged next year to make things a little more streetable and make big power........we'll see how everything holds out as I haven't seen alot of info on turboing a chevelle like how they fit, etc.
I'll keep you updated and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!!
Sid Coleman Nov 23rd, 04, 9:15 AM Tony, you'll have to say hi next time you're up at Cecil. I'll be hanging out with a turquise 68 Chevelle with the black vinyl top. I'll keep an eye out for ya.
Car's looking really nice!! Keep us posted as to the final color so I can spot you up at the track smile.gif
Rumblin70SS Nov 23rd, 04, 12:22 PM Sid,
I'll do that......although I can't remember a turquoise 68 Chevelle. I have seen a meduim blue one though..........let me see a pic if you have one when you have a minute.
I normally race a tubbed black S10 extended cab pickup that runs 10.40's, so look for me in that at the beginning of next years season!!
As soon as I get the color straight I'll post it here so everyone can see it!!
Freddy Mercado Nov 23rd, 04, 1:33 PM Looks good to me. It has to make you happy. Keep up the good work!!!!
Harold Sutton Nov 23rd, 04, 2:38 PM Hi Tony Z, I keep telling my son his Chevelle would have been faster if he'd painted it red instead of dark metallic green. It's too pretty to change now though. Maybe we'll get into the eights this coming season with a bigger, (598), motor and the nitrous working right. Running decent on the first eighth but laying down a little the second eighth. I like your car and hope you keep it red, (my favorite color).
Rumblin70SS Nov 23rd, 04, 5:22 PM Freddy,
Glad you like the car, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!!
Harold,
As much as I like the red, alot of Chevelles, especially the 70's are red. Your son's car looks great green as it stands out!! My car will most likely be red but I haven't been forced to pick a color yet. The decison to paint it took about 30 seconds so you never know what will happen.
As for your sons car, I like the idea of a 598. Does he run this car for points/money or just for fun? Also what type of NOS are you using? If you'd rather not answer on a public fourm, please email me instead. These cars take alot of $$$ and if there is some way to recoup a little bit of it I'd like to do it. Thanks and I'll talk with you soon!!
Motor Martyr Nov 23rd, 04, 7:53 PM Nice! tony i'll put them up on the site, later tonight.
In the mean time, check this out: Old Gold's burnout (http://gallery.godragracing.com/photos/etown/IMG_0262.jpg)
it was the best part of sunday for me :D
JOHN WILSON Nov 23rd, 04, 9:06 PM Tony, red is my favorite color so you can guess what my suggestion is going to be. Lots of different shades of red though. My 67 is 97 Dodge Viper Red and its the kinda red that, when in the sunlight, will jump off the body panel and slap you in the face. Very bright. As far as there being alot of red hot rods, maybe so, but this one is yours so pick what YOU like.
It sounds like we're heading in similar directions with our cars. Mine is currently getting mini-tubs and also just purchased the 18dg heads for my new 427sbc. I'll see you in the mid 9's! I'll be the guy running the small block. ;)
SS_Sean Nov 23rd, 04, 10:54 PM I'm lost. What's wrong with the car?
Sid Coleman Nov 23rd, 04, 11:47 PM Paint is supposed to be Turquise, but I'm guessing medium blue is about right. Here's a crappy capture from the video cam. We usually park on the left side of the track when we're up there. Hope to meet you next year! Keep us all posted when you decide on the color-looks sweet so far!
http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/Sid_Coleman/wheelsup.JPG
He's running 10.50's at around 130mph, next year should be fun!
Sid Coleman Nov 23rd, 04, 11:50 PM .
Rumblin70SS Nov 24th, 04, 10:11 AM Brian,
As always the car looks great!! You've done a great job putting together a sucessful combination in such a short time!! Keep up the good work and I hope to be racing with you soon!!
John,
Red is my favorite color too and believe it or not, the car was Viper Red before!! It's just hard to repaint the car the same color after spending all that money!! It's almost like you want something a little different, but most likely it will end up being red.........or black.......lol
I'm glad to see you are running a 427 SBC with 18 degree heads.......I might have a few questions for you as my friend I drive for is thinking of building a big inch SBC. We run an S10 extended cab with a 383 that runs 10.42 on motor. We really don't know about the big small blocks so I might pick your brain a little if you don't mind!!
Sean,
Really there wasn't a problem with the car......it's just that the paint was 80% and I got beat to death by all my friends for repainting it. The car did look good before but it some bad spots and they never prepped the body correctly. It was only a matter of time before the paint peeled off the major body panels. It was already starting in the trunk and jambs!!
Sid,
Thanks for the pic!! I'll be honest, I was thinking of a completely different car. That one looks Turquise to me!! That car is beautiful!! Much better than the one I was thinking of and it runs better too. I will definitely introduce myself when I see it at the track!!
Harold Sutton Nov 25th, 04, 1:28 PM Hi Tony, We are currently running shootout races with a new organization here called (MAKO ten five) which has run three races so far. The race pictures are available on the Mo-Kan website for the 1/8 mile race where we won our class. We ran at the Tulsa 1/4 mile race and won two rounds and would have done better if we had gotten the nitrous right, if there is such a thing. We're using a NOS big shot plate but haven't gotten much out of it yet. If my son ever gets it working properly i think he'll be real fast. The new motor has bigger everything, AFR heads, more compression, oversized cam with roller bearings and 4-7 lobe swap which we'll need as everyboby is stepping up and getting more power. We also pulled some gear out and put 35 spline axles in, which was good because the street, non nodular Ford housing was cracked at the rear pinion support and would have surely broken out if run any longer. Those 1.31-1.32 60's are finding the weak links in the drivetrain. Best 1/4 so far is 9.22 @ 147.61 and the best 1/8 is 5.79 @ 118.9 so it's easy to see its laying down from the N2O not working right. Looking for eights next year.
70SS540 Nov 26th, 04, 4:38 PM Heres GM Victory Red (newer color) with white stripes. Slightly blurry cause I had to shrink it so much,...i think. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/70SS540/TEAMCHEV.jpg
Rumblin70SS, What size rear tires you runnin and how much backspacing?? Any tubbing or frame cutting?? thanks, Nick
Rumblin70SS Dec 3rd, 04, 6:33 PM Harold,
Thanks so much for the above information, I appreciate it very much. After I get my car running and get used to it, I'd like to step up the way you and your son have. I'll be interested to see how well the car runs with it's new combo and once he gets the NOS sorted out. 9.22 in a car that looks like a street machine is flying along with the 1.31 short times. I'm sure you all willbe deep in the eights next year. Are you all doing any additional chassis work to stiffen things up? Please keep me updated and I'll do the same.
Nick,
Right now, the car has a 15x10 Weld Superlite on it with 5.5 rear spacing and a 28x13.5 ET Street. We ran this combo with a 3/8" spacer and stock width 12 bolt and it did not rub. For the race combo, we plan on going with something of similar size/backspace, but a 29.5x10.5 slick that again should fit with no rubbing according to the chassis builder. No mods have been made to the frame or inner fenders and with all the weight in the car, it sat down over the tire. Only mod that was made was the fender lip was slightly rolled.
Thanks for the red pic also.............I'm most likely going with that color, just might need a custom shade to make it as bright as possible!!
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to ask!!
70SS540 Dec 3rd, 04, 7:32 PM Thanks for the info Tony! one more question I forget to ask you. :D Are you going with the G.M. style four link in the rear or after market?I'm gonna have to hang close to you and Harold S. Seems like our cars are real close in basic configuration. I got some chassis tuning to do though. I'll be closely watching for future posts from you guys. Good luck with your paint job!
c ya, Nick
Rumblin70SS Dec 3rd, 04, 8:49 PM Nick,
My car has the factory 4 link configuration, but I'm using lightwieght chromoly TRZ control arms with hiem joints at each end. As far as mods to the stock setup, I have QA1 coilovers and an Applied Racing Technologies Anti Roll bar.
As soon as the paint is done it'll be back home and we'll start assembling it to take it to the track and run some numbers!!
West72Chevelle Dec 4th, 04, 5:04 AM Nice setup you got there. If you want a bright red check out "Boyd Coddington Red" I think DuPont makes it, it's REAL bright. Also, HOK makes "Blue Blood Red" that is supposed to be the brightest red, but they say it fedes pretty bad if it's prolongly exposed to sun.
70SS540 Dec 4th, 04, 9:08 PM Tony,
Who is TRZ?? Do they have a website?? Did a search and didnt seem to come up with anything. Thanks Nick
Ron_Long Dec 4th, 04, 9:27 PM 70SS540 Here is there site. www.trzmotorsports.com (http://www.trzmotorsports.com)
Rumblin70SS Dec 5th, 04, 8:34 AM Ron,
Thanks for adding the link as it took me a day to see this post.
West72Chevelle,
Thanks for the color suggestions, I appreciate it. I remember seeing something about the Boyds Red on AHR and was wondering how bright it is. Only problem is my girl isn't real fond of Boyd.......if she found out I was painting my car his color I might have a problem.......... :D
70SS540,
As for the TRZ stuff, I have both the front and rear arms on my car. The fronts can be seen in the above pics. They seem like nice quality stuff, but they are really lightweight and not really meant for street use. They are supposed to be good for removing 28 lbs off the nose of the car. Unfortunately I didn't think about weighing the new and old before they put them on.
In all this talking, I know know nothing about your car.......when you get a minute, I'd appreciate it if you'd post your combo and numbers!!
70SS540 Dec 5th, 04, 11:27 AM Thanks for the TRZ info guys! I dont know if I will be able to use it though since is mainly meant for the track. My car sees a lot of street. I will be checking that out further though. I like that weight savings!!
Sorry Tony! graemlins/clonk.gif heres whats in my Chevelle. 99.9% sure it is an SS car. Never found the build sheet though. Everyting else points to SS car. I believe 67000 miles is acurate. (I stripped it down to bare metal and it was very clean) Original color was Dark Cherry with white strips. Kinda wish I would have gone back to that color. I purchased the car red/white stripes. 540 c.i. dynoed 830 + H.P. Turbo 400 reverse valve body 4400 stall. beefed up 12 bolt (moser axles, Eaton posi) 4.10 gear. SSM upper&lower control arms dont know what springs I have in the car. They look new. Competition 3 way shocks. M/T 28x10.5x15 Drag slicks. M/T pizza cutters front.
540 has AFR335 heads,Super Victor CNC intake, Dart Block,Eagle rotating assembly, 1050 QuickFuel carb. Comp. Cam .714 lift approx 270/275 duration @.050. very streetable!
This winter: further beefing the 12 bolt, rear suspension work/beefing and need brakes!!! low vacuum=no brakes!! Also, roll cage. I have to get the car to hook better.
Havent been to the track with the new motor yet. Got it done too late in the season.
Any questions on the details, let me know!!
C ya, Nick
MadMarv Dec 5th, 04, 4:45 PM Just curious, is that a rack & pinion steering setup tucked in there, or am I looking at the picture wrong? I didn't know they made one. does it offer some sort of advantage-- weight, ease of use, feel? I don't think I've seen one on a 'velle before..
Matt
Rumblin70SS Dec 5th, 04, 6:04 PM Nick,
If your car sees alot of street use, the control arms probably won't work for you. My car is only going to see a local cruise night once in awhile and be regulated to mostly track duty.
Your motor makes 830 HP?? That's more than I expected for a car that sees alot of street duty. I'm gonna build another 70 SS for that! :D
My motor only makes 850 and it's 40 cubic inches larger. Did you build the motor or buy the car like that? I assume with that kind of power if you get it to hook, it should run somewhere in the 9's. You'll need that cage to stiffen the chassis! Let me know when you run some numbers!
Matt,
That is a rack and pinion in the car. The guy that did the cage fabbed up the mount and had a rack narrowed for the car so it's a custom fit deal.
The main advantages to it are the fact it's more precise than the steering box and alot lighter since it nixes the box, pitman arm, center link and inner tie rods. Car should go over 150 in the 1/4 so I want it as precise as I can get it!
Any other questions, please let me know!!
Harold Sutton Dec 5th, 04, 6:36 PM Tony, The shorter M/T 10.5W x 28" tire bites much better on ten inch wheels than the taller 10.5 x 29.5" M.T. as the attitude of the car and stiffer sidewall both help the bite. With the taller tires my son's best 60' was 1.389 but most were 1.4s with the shorter tires were getting low 1.3s consistantly and at the last test and tune in ran a 1.322 - 60' and a 5.79 eighth mile but laid down on the second eighth. Be sure they're the W's that have the 11" tread width.
Scott_68_SS Dec 5th, 04, 6:45 PM Turbos eh...
You'll need to goto the Darkside (http://www.turbomustangs.com/forums/index.php?s=cb3010ddbf0215449acd10740d19045c) for info.
For fit, your front bars may be in the way for easy turbo mounting. Since it's a limited street car only a alternator will be needed so that make things a lot easier.
You can get two MP T70's for around $1200 for a bbc. Good for 1000hp+ at 6kish on a 461. Waste gates are another $800. Custom 321ss headers are about 2k. So if you build your own 304ss, you can save 1200-1400 there. The rest of the plumbing is maybe $500 depending on options and DIY. EFI is at least $3000, but not 100% necessary. Especially for a strip car. Intercooler??? Lots of options. Maybe $1000 if you use it. Alcohol injection is cheaper and should be sufficient for 15lbs that you'll need. You can use the rest of your top end except for cam. Unless they are 345cc or so. Are you ready for 8's?
There's guy with a street 96ss camaro on the link above. He has a 357, 19lbs race gas,6spd, runs 149mph. Only high 9's due to chasis/tire inadequate. Oh, dyno'd about 850hp @6k.
If your not careful turbos can be a money pit due to the ease of making hp.
70SS540 Dec 5th, 04, 7:08 PM Tony,
Yes,I basically configured the motor and had friends of mine (Dynamic Speed and Marine)who are engine builders put it together. It made 830 @7000/695 ft.lbs@6000 and was still climbing by 6 h.p. per 100 rpms. Everyone seems to think it would have made 840 to 850 if I would have spun it higher. We had already done 12 pulls and I'd seen enough!!
I would real be happy to see 9s and if that aint enough, I have a Big Shot NOS kit for and extra 275 if needed.
The motor is very street friendly. Idles in gear about 950, dont over heat and seems to get about the same milage as the modified 454 I had in there before! I sure will let you know my times. Unfortunally, its winter here in Michigan, so it'll be a while! :(
If you decide to build that street Chevelle graemlins/thumbsup.gif and want more detail on the motor, let me know!
c ya, Nick
Rumblin70SS Dec 5th, 04, 7:48 PM Harold,
Thanks again for the info. Do you happen to have a part number for the 28" W tire? And do you think the 2" shorter height is helping you come out better with the gear you are running or is it really the way the tire bites? Sorry to ask so many questions but any way I can learn I am. I will most likely go with the 29.5" tall tire for now, as that's what my chassis builder is recommending. He runs a 68 Camaro with stock suspension except for Cal-Tracs and HAL shocks and the car has run a 1.26 60 foot with the 29.5 tires. If something doesn't work, he'll be able to help me get it worked out. Plus the other problem is the car has 4.11 gears in it which is probably more than I need at this point.
Scott,
Thanks for the above link and info, I stuck it in my favorites as I know nothing about turbos and need to start learning now if that's how I plan to go. Obviously the plan would be to use as much of the current combo as I can. This may be just me, but I thought about putting the turbos right up front behind the grille and plumb them from there. Stupid idea, probably but if I could get it to work that's what I would like to do.
My biggest concern is the fact that the motor is so big, being a 580. Would it be good for a turbo setup or would I have to downsize the cubes? I'd also like to see someone who has built a similar 70-72 turbo Chevelle I could work off of to kind of get an idea of how it all fits together. I'd like to make about 1500hp and still be occasionally streetable once it's all said and done. I'll start lurking on the turbo board to see if I can't get some info.
Nick,
You've done a nice job with that 540 and I think you'll be right in the 9's with that combo.......mid 9's if you get it to hook and the NOS will put you in the 8's once it's scienced out. I see where our difference is in the fact that my motor makes it's max power of 852 hp at 6100 and max torque is 800 ft lbs.
I might pick your brain a little to get some tips if my car doesn't run like I'd like it to! The street Chevelle will be my daily driver so it might have to be a little more toned down than that 540!! I need to clean up around here and get the race car done first before I start that project!!
