i bought a transmission for my 66 and with my good fortune it is in fantastic shape, it is even stamped as a Framingham VIN (not mine :noway: )
Any ways the tag is still on it and the transmission has never been apart AFAIK.
The Chevelle fact book specifies this tag to mean 66, L78, M20 only. My question is; what is the diff between an L78 M20 and the other M20s?

Good question...I would like to know as well...
Here is a photo of the 0534 tag on my 66 L78 Ragtop. Trans is untouched. (It won't be this way for long.
The ol' L78 ragtop is up for resto once my coupe is complete...)

It is a good question indeed, one that I don't know the answer to either.. I think we can safely say that there is no difference in the M-20 itself.. ie.. internals, etc.. but like everything else on these cars.. everything at some point gets a part # and matches up to another part... this part # was destined to match up with M-20's behind L-78's

Thanks for the replys Orlando / Mike
here is the VIN and curious 1 stamping that I also have never seen. Note that the G for Framingham is inverted. Two rings on the input shaft.
I guess when Orlando gets around to rebuilding his and I take apart mine we might see what is what...or not.

New one to me ...I'd bet internals no different ....so are you saying that tag number is specific to L78? Tag still on my original M20 but of acourse a lowly L34 I'll look at the tag number out of curiousity .......does it have a gear reduction box on the speedo cable connection ?
