: New Rebuilt Motor, Funny NOISE!?!? HELP WATCH VIDEO!!!!69 chevelle 396

Okay I have a 69 chevelle. I purchased this motor with 0 miles since rebuild. It is a 396 68-69 block. Heads are closed chamber.

After installing the motor, I proceded to break it in for approx 18 mins open headers at 2000rpms. After which I drove it to exhaust shop to add pipe to extend from headers to pipe. I then noticed the funny sound. After hearing it I did change my oil right away and seen metal shaving, finer than sparkle in the oil. I understand this is normal. Is it a lower end noise? Rockers? I just dont know. I do however have a waterpump that is leaking on the back panel of the pump itself. Could it be the waterpump making the noise from grinding or something? BTW, Motor sat for approx 4 years in storage before I bought it and primed it. PLEASE HELP Here is the video

From what I hear it sounds like the engine builder installed a Pete Jackson gear set. What I would do is take off all belts and run the engine with no accessories to see if you still have the noise. You can take a long screwdriver/pry bar and touch different areas of your engine and put the other end to your ear to see where the noise is the loudest.

I agree it sounds like a gear drive timing set. Pull the belt off and verify it isn't a alternator or water pump.

pulled the belt off and still there. I hear the gear drive myself, but seems that there is a clickly click sound. I think you can hear it most when i put camera under car. Is a PJ gear drive supposed to make a clicking sound too? Or just the whining.

Sounds like a miss or possibly a header leak.

Did you remove the oil pan and valve covers and look at the inside before installing the engine? Check valve lash,
Check for loose plug wires. Listen at the tail pipes to see if its missing and from what side.

No, I didnt pull the oil pan to check for lash. How do i check the tail pipe for a miss?

sounds like a powerglide whine to me.also clacking sounds like valve lash.

umm whats powerglide whine. I guess I can google how to adjust my lash. Or can I just drive it the way it is safely?

trans whine, exhaust leaks, gear drive

It sure doesn't sound right.
I think I would tare it down and see where those metal shavings came from.

BTW, you're going to wear out the ignition lock with all that weight hanging on it.

Well I thought you were talking about a 2 speed powerglide transmission but never had one to know that they make a whining noise. I know the glitter like shavings in oil are from break in. After I changed it its ALOT less hardly noticeable. Here is a vid with valve covers off, I think the noise is a little more audible now.

Its not a header leak?

I heard the ticking sound. It could be a collapsed lifter or one not taking prime. Or as already stated, valve lash.

The gear drive would add more metal shavings than a chain.

just sounds like a loose rocker. hard to tell though unless I hear it in person.

Okay I will start with adjusting the rockers starting with TDC cylinder 1, if all is adjusted fine and still there, I will open up the intake and replace the lifters.....unless there is a better way to fix this......Thx for all the info so far, really helps....

Not sure if this will help but a few months after installing a new 350 engine on my 69 chevelle which i sold> I heard what sounded like a blower noise coming from the engine, i figured it was leaking somewhere in the intake system, it sounded different than your car but might give it a try, what i did to get rid of it, was this, I felt kind of smart at the end after it was gone  all i did was adjust the carb a little and got rid of it, i was told it was sucking way too much air and not enough gas....anyways yours sound more like a gear drive chain, might be the camera thats interfering with the sound, just thought youd give it a try.

that sounds like a gear drive to me. I'd check. on the first video I thought it came from the carb. you got and extra one you could pop on and try?

I had a bearing go bad in my alt once, sounded just like that .. Like others have stated, pull the belts to verify this first, it's easy and free.... Could be a gear drive, but mine was louder then that.

How do i check the tail pipe for a miss?

You can take a dollar bill and hold it against the tail pipe. What you would be looking for, if all things are mechanically correct, is that the dollar bill would be blown away from the tailpipe by the exhaust from each cylinders exhaust stroke.

If the bill is sucked against the tail pipe during an intake stroke that indicates a bent, burned of in some way injured exhaust valve.

What would be happening is that the exhaust stream would be reversed back thru the faulty exhaust valve during that cylinder's intake stroke.

That particular test will ONLY indicate a bad exhaust valve...nothing more.

A bad exhaust valve will normally cause the bill to be sucked back against the tailpipe pretty vigorously.

Just adjust the lash . after you have checked the belts and be done with it. you didn't ck and adjust the lash before you installed the engine

My Pete Jackson gear drive still whines when dumped into gear.I notice how your whine seemed to disappear when shifted into gear.I think the transmission front pump is noisy and you can uncouple the torque converter from the flexplate to verify this.Once you remove the three converter bolts..push the converter back into the trans pump before start up.If you isolate the noise to the trans pump..verify your fluid level before tearing into it.pump cavitation will make this type of noise.

The whine sounds like a trans whine.

I kind of hear the whine sound that happens when the flywheel is touching the tin between the block and transmission.
